In a untuned sytem restriction is very detrimental. Adding
additional outlet area frees up some power and more importantly reduces the
pistons ring belt temp. That being said performance can be hurt by just hogging
out the outlets hole.

I've been following these muffler mod threads for a while. Now its time to act. The other day I opened up the muff on the 066 and pulled out the screen. Thats all I could do in the field. Next step will be removing the box insisde the muff.

Now...here's my question. Is there a rule of thumb about how large the ID of the exhaust tubes should be compared to the exhaust port on the engine? RB quoted Ken Dunn saying that the exhaust pipe should be about 1.25-1.5 the area of the post. Does that sound right? If all we are looking for is a hole, why even put on a tube? Just drill out the muffler maybe?

Is there a "best" location for the tubes? Straight out front, top, sides? In the pics I see a lot of variations with the same saws.

Maybe I'm thinking too hard. Might be time to just poke a hole and see what happens.

The length of the exhaust pipe must have some difference too. I know that using a full-on pipe would be the best but that doesn't work too well out in the field.

Tom:confused:

Tom one reason for the tubes is because you still want to be able to direct the exhaust, because we all know how it feels when the saw is in a big log @ WOT burning the sh!t out of our hands.

Also the use of a tube helps prevent debris from going back into the muffler and being sucked into the port.

Rich,

It is $40 or so now...

And both ports still can be made a bit bigger...

Tom,

Ken now prefers holes only, with deflectors as needed. It is easier to install a screen this way, which keep debris out of the muffler too. I did a crude job on an 036, maybe almost too much area, but the gains were around 20%.

Rich, the 488 cuts pretty well, about 10% slower than the 346.

I'm not a big fan of the tubes coming straight out, as they could catch the tree on fire, or worse, get so close as to possibly choke off the exhaust and raise the operating temp too high.

The only reason Ken prefer's internal screened muffler ports and not pipes is for the USDF,make it look as stock as possible on a woods saws.
As far as your Solo ,that Clearwater Clem built for you. You just don't know how to run it!!!

084,
Gypo is using an 084 KD race saw and he's real hip on Ken Dunn as well. You should talk to him or his brother John sometime.

Doug
Ken tells me that John gots the carb so fuct up on the 084 or a main bearing/seal that it will not even run.

Team Dunn

When Ken lets John use one of his saws he needs to remember to put the plastic limiter caps back on to make it childproof:D

Stihl084,
Not Gypo's fault. That saw started out really lean in Clearwater. Ken thinks it's a crankcase leak. Now after Gypo "works" on it, we may have another story to tell.

John do you stihl have the 084 and are you bringing it to Dans. We haven't seen much of that saw let alone Duals. Doug sure did take the cake on the dual battle.

Hi Mark, still got the 084, but I think Pistol Pete is mad at me, he hung up before Humphrey Dumbroski could even say hello.
Mryb, won't say nothing, in fact I am dubbing him "Schultz", when I ask him questions, there's just a long pause, then he says, " I know nothing, I know nothing".
