I had a big day planned for yesterday. Wanted to go hunting for a few hours then cut for for awhile, then drink beer for awhile. woke up to 5 degrees with 25 mph winds.
Ended up just drinkin beer.
Don't mind the cold toooo much but 5 degrees with wind just plain stinks.
We've got a nice layer of ice over a few inches of snow which makes getting around a bit difficult but extended forecast shows a warm up coming. (low 30's and sun.) That will at least melt things down a tad bit.

I had planned on doing a lot of splitting this past weekend, but the foot of snow on Friday, on and off on Sat., followed by sleet and rain on Sunday made a real mess of everything. I still have pleanty of tree work to do, but I need to get caught up on splitting before I can bring anymore wood back to the house. I'm hoping we can catch a break with the weather so I can get back out there soon.

For me, the period between Oct. and the first snow is prime time, then cutting comes to a halt with the arrival of snow. Cool temps, no vegetation.

Come March, April (or last year, May:dizzy:) I keep my eyes peeled for roadside stuff that's come down over the winter. Between last summer's tornado and the recent ice storm, pickins should be good. There's a brief period between mud season and black fly season when I can get out into the woods when it's not too hot, squishy, or buggy.

My last cutting this year was about a week ago. Finished up a largish ash that got blown down a couple miles from home. Have it all split and in the barn as emergency wood if I need to dip into the reserves. Still have about 5 split cords in the attached barn, which should get us to the end of hearing season.

There's about 3 cords split in a pile outside which will serve as the nucleus of my 2009-10 supply.

Don’t worry about the snow. I am sure it will be gone soon. We bought the kids season ski passes for Christmas.

I thought i was going to out smart the weather this year but it got me again, well partly. I had taken down a couple maples, oak and a birch that had all been pushed over at the stump. Theres a decent stream to cross thats actually more mud than water on this section of logging road. I wanted to get them last year but the snow came too fast and deep. So I went out last weekend to pull them out. I thought the crossing was frozen. Ended up sinking to my axles. Good thing the bottom is solid. I was able to pull them out and get them to my cutting area, but still in the woods. While out there I had my eyes on another maple thats coming over at the stump. Dont know if Ill be able to get out there with the 2 feet of snow now. May just put the front tire chains and give it hell.
