got a good deal on a hardnose 30". Ive always run sprocket tips and am curious about the longevity of it. particularly when pulling it through larger wood. does that accelarate the tip wear on it? I'm curious to hear evryone's opinion.

They're intended for running in dirty conditions that would clog or damage a sprocket. Run your chain looser than you normally would on a sprocket nose, and your oil maxed, if applicable. The size of the bar shoudln't matter. They've got hardened noses. Myself, I have no use for them, but that's not to say they're worthless. I have no use for a bow bar either, but they've got their niche.

thanks fishuntcutwood,
I have heard that about these bars being used for dirty condition. I,ll probably keep it for just blocking up large chunks. I'm a sucker for a good deal!maxed oil huh? hope my thumb can keep up with it!

If you got a good deal on it run the sucker and don't look back. As already mentioned run the chain a little looser than you would on a sproket nose.
One thing they are handy for is you can swap it between saws (if similar mount) and can run any pitch chain on it.

I like them and use them as long as I have plenty of power to pull it.
If I am pushing the bar length match to my powerhead I prefer sprocket nose.
I find it easier to dress the rails and get more use out of the hardnose in the long run being as sprockets wear out faster and eventually donot match the rails if you replace them. It seems it is rarer to throw the chain also with the hard nose.

Why is that? Learn me sumthin'

More friction uses more hp. There is allot of chain pull at the bar tip, ive heard something like sprocket tip bars are 20% faster in the cut than hard nose bars. I'm not sure if that was a fact or not but the old guy that told me is usually right.
