There is one logger that I know of who takes a hatchet and gives 2 or 3 wacks to the muffler whenever he buys a new saw. Instant muffler mod.

A lot of you guys have posted some pictures of some very well done muffler mods. (Stuff that if I attempted, would likely result in burned fingers or a burned down shop.) So, how about just drilling some holes? Wouldn't that essentially have the same effect?

While drilling holes will achieve the same end I wont consider doing it for a couple of reasons. Number one is I always do my muffler mods so the exhaust is expelled in the same direction as stock. That is to say it is blown out to the right side of the saw. This prevents burnt logs and toasty hands.

Do they place the hatchet and hit it with something, or just swing the hatchet itself?

Awwwwwwwwwwww Spike, that wouldn't be pruty,LOL.

I've been told if you open the exhaust hole to 80% the size of the exhaust port the job is done. The way Rich did his 441 muffler is about exactly what I was told would be the correct way to mod a muffler..

Most guys take a little pride in their saws and feel (as I do)that just randomly putting holes in a muffler is a little asinine!

Well, I wouldn't take random shots with the drill. I'd put some thought into the location of the holes. (And I wouldn't leave the muffler on the saw while drilling)

Now, the hatchet approach is real random. Guy just swings away. No accidents that I am aware of.

But, you guys think I should drop the drill idea, huh? I could be charged with cruelty to saws or something?

Ever been around an honest old logger? Sometimes asinine is mildly put, but, I have seen some asinines that were diamonds in the rough and a pleasure to be in the timber with. I have never seen a muffler chopper though.:( :chainsaw:

hatchet job!!!

When I work on a saw, the last thing I want is to have someone say who the h--l worked on this. Most saw owners would like people to think what a good job someone did to there muffler. Having it do the job you want while looking close to factory or a cool custom is what most people try to end up with. just my 2 cents!!!!!! Rick.

Great Caesars' Ghost!!

Boy, I'm taking a beatin' on this one. OK, I'll admit it wasn't such a good idea.

I guess that hanging the mufflers from a string and shooting them with a .22 wouldn't get much positive feedback either?

Sounds like ya need a better rifle,, or a better rest or better aim.:hmm3grin2orange:

Plus I don't like the effect of those soft lead .22 on the metal. I'd go for .30 Mil ball ammo, right through CLEAN.

Don't have a 45, huh?
