and, while we're here letting these two saws off the hook, say +/- $100 or so from $250 is there another model i should save up my pennies and go ahead and look for while i'm shopping, or is there not gonna be much of a difference til the +$500 range? like i said before, the mythic longevity and what sounded like pretty all-around usefulness of the 028 is what had me considering that model, but its been brought up so many times about that models age, i just wonder if there's something better at this point i'd be better off hunting for.

That 028 is worth 150-200 all week long in my book (a definitive look-see would tell more). Like AthonyVa states, try looking at it with two bills in the pocket..........you know what "they say". Money talks. The pictues look good, that saw looks to be in excellent shape. If an onsite inspection confirmed this it could be cutting wood for your kids with proper care. Is that price on the high side? Yup, but if you like it and it's within your spending range it's a quality saw that will deliver reliably for many years to come. Just my .02.

I have several 028s (five to be exact) and I would take one of them over a consumer grade saw of any color all day long. But that's just me. Not that the Rancher is a bad saw, just not built the same and it's at a pawn shop (a red flag for me). If you were comparing to a 346 or other pro grade saw I might give it more consideration......and a lot cheaper because of the location.

The age of a saw isn't a big deal to me, it's what condition it's in. I cut up a huge maple tree in my yard today with a saw that was well over 20 years old and it did it as well as some of my newer saws, maybe better but the saw ran well and has a new chain on it. The trunk of the maple was over 30 inches across. My wife looked at me and asked "What kind of saw is that?" I told her it is a Dayton..she'd never heard of a Dayton.

Something you mentioned..you said you could borrow a chainsaw. Some good friends will loan you a saw but it is my opinion that most would really rather not. You might use that as an excuse to make a purchase sometime.

I've seen these on eBay as well at less that $325. What happened that so many need factory refurbs?

Most of them I have looked at, still had the Box store"Starting instruction and warning" stickers on them.

All of the Box stores have a very generous "No questions" return policy which leads to all manner of hijinks.

Windstorm hits, joe doofus buys a 455 and cleans up a downed tree, dulls the chain, throws the chain, floods it, can't figure out the brake etc. then takes it back for a refund, or exchange for another with a sharp chain on it.

Same thing happens with Generators. It got so bad that our local TSC adopted an exchange only policy and no refunds, on saws and Generators.

What's goofy is the same saws then get sold at an honest ta goodness dealer, and very few ever come back in, because before they leave, the dealer walks the buyer through running the saw.

I have seen 'em go on E-Bay for 299 bucks, but anyone looking for dealer support and warranty coverage would be better off spending another 25-30 bucks at a dealer.

The really nice thing about refurbed 455's is guys with Orchards can buy half a dozen and turn the pruning crew loose and not worry.
It's tough to bust the things,They hold up to getting thrashed, and the warranty covers everything but straight gas. If one or two grow legs and migrate to Texas all of a sudden, it's a lot better than losing 600 bucks each.

Stay safe!

455 husky

Your email jogged my memory and it was for 299 bucks. Probably plus something to ship it out, so I'd agree, the dealer saw would be the best buy by far.
Thanks for the explanation on the refurbs.
It is truly amazing what people will do if given the chance. I really hate Husqvarna's policy. They cut out 2 of the dealers here.

And I agree, if a saw runs well, its age does not matter, unless its truly an antique. Then the job will take a little more time. But anything quality from the last 20 years is good as new to me.:blob2:

I don't know if you missed my post but I'd seriously consider getting a Makita 6401 from Home Depot, they often sell their rentals, and they can be had for less then $200 sometimes. They are a great saw.

If you've got LOTS of time the 028 is a rock solid saw that will be around for a while.
If you have a life and don't want to spend ALL of your time cutting wood the 455 is significantly faster!!!

I would be slow to make that decision.......slower even than an 028Super!

thanks for the help you guys. i'll be keeping an eye out for the next deal it looks like. i didn't get any suggestions for any "little bit" bigger/better models, but maybe tooling around here i'll be able to figure something out.
i did see your post about the makita from home depot, but i'm a good piece away from the nearest home depot..in fact, i'm not sure where the closest one is come to think of it-which means not inside 2 hrs. thanks for the suggestion though, and any others that might come along.

again i really do appreciate your help

save your money. since your at $250 price wise, why not pitch in a little more and get a brand new ms290 with a warranty. or keep looking for much better deals on used saws.

If you really wanted an 028 Super (REALLY nice looking saw, BTW) you might consider this deal... otherwise, that's kind of a lot for the machine. If I were looking for one beast, an 036 or a 361 might do you better.
