Is there another plug, other than what is recommended in the owners manual, that I should use in my MS 260 now that it has an opened muffler?

Thanks.

make sure you regap it after every tank of fuel or better yet replace it with a new one. :D Make sure you send the faulty ones to Mike Maas.;)

I grind a split in the electrode and index it toward the intake
valve, but only with 98 octane with a synthetic oil mix at 200:1

I don’t bother to index the plug as using a shim can pull the plug too far out of the chamber. Plus you don’t get the same benefit compared to indexing towards the intake valve on a four stroke. When modifying a plug I do make sure that the side electrode is centered, shortened and shaved at the sides as needed to meet the edges of the center electrode, maintain sharp edges to promote the easiest spark jump. Thinning the side electrode also helps to unshroud the spark for a slightly better exposure to the AF mix.

SilverBlue;

Would the difference be measurable? I know that the configuration of the electrodes can affect the shape of the spark and help in igniting extremely lean mixtures, but a saw shouldn't be running that lean. If it was measurably better for starting in sub zero weather, I would buy it. Not to throw cold water by any means, but is it "hype" or is it measurably better performance?

I would say that performance is measurable, perhaps not noticeable to the average user and there are so many variables such as coil output, gap, engine design and operating conditions. Of course if your coil does not have to work as hard it stays cooler also. Don’t think that you will get a huge difference in saw performance but my point is that it is the small details that add up to better performance longevity, fuel economy and reduced emissions.
