The CL 8800 lead I had fizzled out this morning. Turns out the person who responded was only 15 years old and his daddy was none to happy when I called about buying the saw. Back on the hunt again.

I had also said I thought I knew who bought the pair yesterday but it turns out that I do not. I talked to the feller this morning and he had never even heard of a Homelite 8800.

I contacted Johnnie when I saw the ad as I was interested in the parts saw to find a replacement handle for my 540. I bought mine new in 1991 from Northern Hydraulics and it came with a 20" bar that has never seen wood.

This is a "before" picture:

Any help on a handle is appreciated.

...

Johhnie, I'm sorry the deal went south, but I must thank you for providing a good laugh. I literally laughed out loud  when I visualized the dad finding out that his saw was "for sale."

I want some education on this 545 you speak of???!!!!!

Count me in on this too! Never saw a 545 for sale..... never heard discussion about what makes it different.... well there was a little speculation at another site awhile back, but nothing was conclusive..... heck, I never even saw an IPL for a 545! This thing is as mysterious as the Homelite 850 (not talking about an XL-850) with the exception there's a picture of it sitting on Mr. Acre's site. It'd be great to find out the truth about this one.

Just got another email and there is a 8800 about 10 miles from me, I am going to look at it when I get off work. The feller is looking for a smaller saw so I may be able to work out some kind of trade. All he said is he has the saw and it runs, hope it is not a worn out mess or he wants a ton of dough for it.

It looks like Johnnie may be the new "bloodhound" for Hommie 8800's. You certainly have had more 8800 action in the past couple days than I have in the past year.

They have a strong collector following. 8800's grab a hefty price on the bay. To the best of my research, they are the last of the American made Homelites. The 540 being the first piston ported saw they built and the 8800 the last (I will be corrected shortly if incorrect). 540 open port, 8800 closed, 550cs JD closed.

The 350/360/450/550/650/750 AV Homelites were all piston port saws built long before the 540/545/8800. I believe the 8800 was indeed the last "real" Homelite that was a piston port design. There were also 340 and 410 Homelites within this same 'last Homelite', supposedly Solo designed series. My buddy has one of the MP (demo/cutoff) saws based on the 540. He loves it.

Thanks for that, Aaron. I don't know how that series slipped my mind. May have been aided by a few budweiser's and a taste of amereto lol.

I have been surprised at how fast I was able to turn a couple up. I may have also turned up a metal fuel tank for Gary's 540 that I am waiting for the man to email me pictures. I am off work now so I am heading out in the pouring rain to see what I can do with this saw. I am taking a secert trading weapon with me..... A beautiful little Homelite Super EZ Auto with a 16 inch bar, new chain and recently rebuilt fuel system. Who can say no to a Super EZ Auto?

Go get 'em, Johnnie! A free ticket to Field Day of the Past awaits you if you are successful (and some Mini Macs if you want).

Not me! I never turn those down...

Don't scare him off with the mm's Gary!

If you do not have something for him, I bet I do. If the saw is junk but has a good tank, grab it for me.

OUCH!!!!! that sucks about the handle :(

hopefully there's some parts on the junker (if it IS ONE) that will help the BOTH of us out....

IF Johnnie is still willing to help, or course! ;)

Actually, the very first piston ported Homelite was the 150. It was around for 4 or 5 years before the 350/650 were let loose. Gotta love those 150s :smile2:.

I'd forgotten about that. They are strong runners......................when they're runners. Homelite's first "use it and throw it away" saw. I guess somebody at Homelite felt they needed to sell a small saw that was a MAJOR PITA to work on to compete with the mini-macs....

No we don't!:jester:

We would all like to forget about them. I have several left behind by customers. Actually never worked on one, never able to get the case half screws loose to get to anything....not that I gave it a lot of effort:D

Just put the bars and clutch drums (rim drive) aside (and toss the rest), as they work on Homelite E-Z saws too.

Okay all you fellers, it is a done deal and I am on the way home. More details and pictures to come, boy this thing is CHERRY!! Nicest old feller you will ever meet and he simply fell in love with the little Super EZ Auto, when I left his house the rain had let up and he was tearing the wood pile to pieces. I am so excited about this saw that my hands are actually shaky, it could very well be the nicest saw I own.

Congrats! Check the intake boot first thing. That is a weak point just like the modern saws today. They are still available new but a bit spendy.
