Hi and Merry Christmas!

I have an older Homelite Super EZ saw that is getting hard to start and once it is started, runs about 10-15 mins. and quits. Won't start again until cooled off. I replaced the plug, gas tank fuel filter, air filter and blew out the fuel line and what I could of the carb. Also adjusted the carb settings. When running, it runs good.

Short of tearing apart the engine, I'm wondering if anyone has an idea on what this problem could be?

Hang onto your hat for about 3 weeks.

I have a Super EZ automatic, totally disassembled right now. I'm waiting for a head gasket, 2 crank seals, and some documentation from Bill Walcott.

My saw has the exact same problems as yours does. The only thing I noticed wrong was the oring land on the bar side crankcase developed erosion. It's as if the case would expand slightly when it became warm and allowed blow by to erode the ring land. The crank seals could be defective as well but doubtful as there is a surprising little wear on the crankshaft from the seals, considering how many hours there is on this saw.

I used a flat hone to lap the seal face as much as I could to eliminate the erosion. The erosion occurred over an area of nearly 90 degrees of the circumference. I was able to reduce this area to about 20 degrees. What I intend to do is replace the oring and use loctite 515 with primer N. Even when the saw is hot, this will insure crankcase integrity. Along with this I'm replacing the crank bearings. The cylinder, piston, and connecting rod looked good enough. The exhaust port was all clogged and took some time to clean up because the muffler wasn't port matched to the exhaust throat causing low velocity eddy's where carbon could and did build up.

No idea if this is going to fix it or not. If it doesn't run this time, I'm going to give it away.

Email me if you want a detailed disassembly procedure.

Tony, setting aside the gender postulate for the moment, I'd think many of our readers wouldn't like to conjure the image of how you may have come into this tid bit of experience.

Bob, Had the same problem with an EZ.
The crank seal would blow by a little oiling the points. I replaced the seal only to have it happen again 5 months later. THe shaft was in perfect condition. I figured the case was pressurizing and gave up. Was a nice saw up till then.
