Recently got into the chainsaw collecting/repairing hobby and have picked up a couple McCullochs, Poulans, Sears, and Pioneer saws. Looking to pick up a Homelite soon. Found a couple Homelites near me (XL12 and 360) that look decent.

Which saw would be better to pick up? What are the big differences between the two?

I’d go for the XL12 personally. I own 2 XL12s and 5 Super XLs as well as an XL500, they are a great series of saws, well built. My grandpa has a 360, like most of the old 360 series saws do, I had to replace the intake boot on it.

360 if works and you want to have in collection. but I wouldn’t use it to cut, as said airboot, plus unique ignition system make it difficult to service, best as a shelf queen.
Xl12 can use more reliable and lots of parts out there

Ok cool, sounds like I should look for a good XL12 then over the 360. There's a couple XL12's near me currently, but the prices are just a little too high. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good deal. Looks like a cool saw to have!

Ya, give it some time and you’ll probably come across one for free-$50.

I'm hoping so. So far the most I've paid for a saw is $140. Most of them I got for $35-75. Almost all of them were pretty easy to get running again too. Carb kit, fuel lines, fuel filter, new spark plug, clean air filter, clean saw / bar / sharpen chain, etc. Hoping I can find a decent XL12 for $50 or so.

There's a red Homelite super XL not too far from me for $60 that apparently runs, that would be a nice one to grab too.

The super xls are good saws too, if you want one you should get that one since it already runs at that price. Most I’ve ever paid is $160 for a chainsaw, that’s hard to beleive considering some of the saws in my collection.

If it's still around this weekend I might go check it out. Been so busy with work lately can't really get away to do much else.

I got a couple saws for free from friends/family but they're not worth much (old Craftsman plastic saw). Figured I'd see if I could get them running again without too much effort.

Been looking for some vintage Poulans too but none ever seem to pop up for sale near me.

👍🏻 I get a decent portion of my saws for free. Vintage Poulans don’t pop up locally here much either

There was a guy who was selling a Poulan 245a and Poulan Wild Thing together for $75 over in Illinois. The 245a looked mint and he said it ran a few years ago. It was too far for me from Michigan really, but even if I wanted it, it was sold within a few hours haha! That was a heck of a deal for someone.

Where are you getting free saws from? I need to find a source of free saws haha! Then again maybe I don't, my garage would be filled then!

I found a nice XL12 that just popped up for sale not too far from me. Guy wants $90 though. Might check it out this weekend if I have time. There seems to be tons of those around though, so I'm sure I'll end up with one sooner or later.

I run into free saws at the scrapyard, landfill, thrift store, family members, and forums. $90 is pricey for an xl12 imo unless it’s minty or is a foreign model. Them Poulans were a good deal, I need to get myself a wild thing just for fun.
