hey team

so i moved into a lifystyle block in christchurch NZ

got a bunch of pine hedges trimmed and am going to have years of firewood from that pine being soft i know wont last forever espicaly in nz with high humidity any guess as to how long it will last is in a wood shed cut and split off the ground,

also theres a bunch of dead blue gums (the australian kind) standing dead from a drought 2 years ago that are going to come down that will be cut and split and put in the firewood shed this being a harder wood was hopeing it would last a bit longer any guesses to how long before this starts to go soft

guess just need to decide if im going to try sell some then buy more later or if i can just fill up the shed and hope it all lasts

cheers

Hi Justin,
Both will last forever if it's dry and off the ground, think of the frame of a house. Just be careful of termites.
If I were you I'd fill the shed with blue gum first and if you have additional space store pine. Pine is great for starting fires, gum is good for burning all night.
If your new to fires you may be suprised how much you go through in a season.
If you store the wood outside, the pine should last 2-3 years as long as its off the ground and gets an opportunity to dry out between rainy days. The blue gum would last double that. The stuff at the bottom of the stack would be the first to get rot as its most likely to stay damp.

I'm jealous.... Would love to have a lifestyle block in NZ.

I don't know how it is in NZ but where I'm at in California, we have bark beetles that go after the pine and long horned borers that go after the euc. Covering the wood with clear plastic will bake the bugs and prevent them from spreading.

I had to Google what a lifestyle block was. Here it's called a farm or hobby farm. I'm logging on one now, about 170 acres of clear cutting for pastures.

Why don't you leave as much Blue gum standing as possible ,concentrate on the pine ,if the bluegum trees don't have to be felled straight away they will last for years standing ,mix a bit of the blue gum with the pine to make it go further and don't worry to much about the termites.

Cheers guys

yea i just had the glue gums cut down there the straight growing knighting gums, a few of them have already been standing dead for about 2 years they have got some type of bug boreing through them so will bug bomb then and wrap in plastic

Theres prob 50 odd gums maby a truck and trailer load and a half and a bunch of pine as well maby 40m2 worth of pine firewood think thats about 12-14 chord i dont So il prob try sell some but is a hasseling selling then buying so mite build another wood shed and try sorr as much as possible

To store the gums for longer term is it going to make them last any longer keeping them in logs or just get them into a quilty wood shed and they should last as long as there going to

As well the pines fresh cut, can i cut and split it and put it straight in the wood shed or will it start to mold if i put it staright in?

Ps lifestyle blocks are usaly around 10-30 acers in nz, 170 acers could easly be a profitble lil farm in nz if it was on the flat with irragation, lifestyle blocks are commonly refered to as lifesentance blocks hahaha, but is nice to live Near the city but be on 10 acers beside a river than living in town

Welcome to the site. We need pictures. 10 acres on a river is like a little piece of heaven. I have 30 acres in West Virginia we use to hunt on, it's another little piece of heaven, Joe.
