I have a customer, someone I've worked for for the past four years, two or three times a year. Owns 7 acres and caretakes 33 more next door. He asked me last year to hunt the deer on his property to save his fruit trees. They rub their antlers on the young trees and damage or kill them. I didn't hunt it thinking it was an overstated problem. This year, I go back and can actually see many damaged trees and he says there are multiple deer on the property and will I please promise to come kill them this year. He hasn't asked for any compensation but to keep the place exclusive to myself and a friend, I was thinking of working for him for free but don't know where to draw the line. There is no doubt I'll be getting my tags both filled this year. How much work would be enough to compensate this guy?

Nothing, at least for conditions around here. We have more deer around here than anyone can shoot. It seems to be the same condition in your area, otherwise he would not be suffering from all of the deer damage.

The deer are so prolific in KC, I consider that I am going deer hunting every time I turn the key to my ignition. Seldom a day goes by that I don't see a dead deer on the road, and that includes urban residential and shopping areas sometimes.

Unless you REALLY like to hunt, and cannot find any place better, I think that you should consider knocking off a couple of Bambi to be fair exchange for the reduced the deer population he will be receiving. He apparently considers you "trustworthy", so he is getting his deer population reduced at a lower risk to himself than if he just let anyone hunt there.

You might consider asking them how much he is willing to pay you to come kill Bambi for him! You could even negotiate favorable terms; $/ head or $/hour, perhaps with productivity bonuses or special rates for does.

He should be paying you to hunt his land. My buddies mom owns a nursery and has open season on deer and rabbits and has paid guys in the past to hunt on her land. This guy can claim property damage and get land owner tags. At least in WI anyway. Hope it helps

I don't quite comprehend the issue here.

He wants you to hunt the orchard.
It's full of tasty Venison Backstraps on the hoof.

Go whack a couple and fill the freezers, THEN ask him if he could use some roasts and steaks, and remember to send him a card at Christmas time.

Most growers these days are required to have a wildlife mitigation program to maintain GAP compliance, and hunting is one of the reccommended practices to have in place. You are doing him a favor, as he feels you can be trusted to hunt the place and respect it, and he's doing you a favor in granting access to prime hunting ground others are denied.

Take it as a gesture of friendship with no strings.;)

UMMMMMMMM!!!!! Backstrap tasty tasty backstrap!

So far this is definately turning me to the other side of the issue. He wants the deer dead anyway so why pay? I guess the only issue I have is the exclusivity. This is a hot spot for big antlered deer and there are no other places even close to hunt it. It's all surrounded by residential homes that disallow hunting. It could be all mine and thats a very good thing. I guess guilt of somesort is getting me.

Does taste better, and are more important for population reduction. Conversely, the bucks are the one rubbing their antlers on the trees.

So...kill 'em all

I suppose about half as much as if you had to service his beautiful young wife.:jawdrop:

Cape,

Does he normally charge for hunting concessions or lease for hunting rights?

Did he even mention charging or rates? LOL!!!

Just give him a holler and set up a meeting in order to figure out where to put up the stands and do some scouting.
Then ask him flat out if he's looking for a fee.

I doubt he is, or he woulda mentioned it up front.;)

Start clearing space in the freezer!!!:D

Bro,
Deer scourge is up everywhere with the ####ing ticks, 3/E spread and so on. Open season. You have reserves? Try letting your constrictive client go, and start working for the state. There are several anti deer programs as options right now.

Yeah, kill 'em all, and let....

... let the cook sort them out! :D

I totally agree with Dingeryote.

It is always customary to be gracious to your host when they allow you to hunt their property. Yeah sure, you're doing him a favor but private hunting land is a premium commodity these days... Especially in Mass. It is a gesture of friendship on his part.

It has always been customary to offer some meat, send a Christmas card or gift basket and even offer to help with some chores on any of the private land I have been given permission to hunt. I was just raised that way.

Remember to close any gates behind you, don't litter and treat the land as if it were your own.

Congrats on your good fortune!

You're all right, too much thought on my part. I just ordered a trailcam and I'm going to the property tommorow. I'll talk to him then. Real nice guy. I'm sure I can get it all to myself.

Thanks!

Bucks and does...Does that sound right?

There ought to be some other way to spell "doe x 2" that doesn't look like another very common word. Does anyone have a correction for the spelling of does (not bucks) ?

"Bambette" is acceptable around here.:D

But ya gotta be in on the counter PC/anti-Disney/PETA dark humor to truly appreciate it.
