Have you considered a crane ?

It sounds like the planter has no bottom. Is there any reason why the planter cannot be lifted off the trunk ? I have done several that way.

Once you have it in the air (or moved), the stump should be easy to deal with.

If you MUST cut it up with a chainsaw: buy a short bar, and put some carbide tipped chain on it. Slower cutting than normal chain, it will breeze through dirt and at least a little rock without getting dull. Quite expensive though, and very tricky to get sharpened !

just go at it with an axe and a sharpened fencing spade. Digging out the surrounding soil first should take more than a few minutes. surely. Or how about a normal cheap 9 inch hand grinder from the DIY shop. Use it, knacker it, and take it back for a refund if you bust it.

Material is cheap, labor is not. Knock out the planter, grind, rebuild, providing you have the equipment to do so.

Can the planter box be turned on its side and then grind into it? maybe a winch or comealong to flip it and the jack it back into place when you are done.
