No problem, I'm glad it worked.
I still can't believe just how small the opening is on the cat cnvtr 141 muffler.
Very restrictive and holds way to much heat!
That is a pencil eraser I'm holding there for a size comparison.

Hole Size

Max , I didn't recognize the pencil eraser . Yep that is small . My PP220 had two small louvres in the back . The big one was 1/2" wide by 1/8" opening , the small one was 1/2" wide by 1/16" . I wonder how long they expect an engine to last running that lean .

I can only guess that it will be short lived with the restriction and the heat the cnvtr holds. It is a shame they design these to fail.

To scottr, That 220 I just bought has the same muffler you describe. 2 small holes in the back. The saw is a 2001. What have you done, carb, muffler work? That little 220 is a little screamer for the small stuff I was wanting it for. The Anti-vibe is perfect on the 220 too. Alot better then the AV on a 222 I tried once.

Pp220

Tm , the muffler gasket needed trimming because it was too large for the exhaust port , then took the spark arrestor screen out then drilled the diffuser holes to 1/64" larger diameter . Then I drilled six holes 1/8" diameter , three down stream from each louvre . Then I adjusted the carb . It sure helped it breath a lot better .

Heres a back view of the muffler scottr on my 220. How did you get the 2 halves apart. I tried and couldnt get it apart like on my others. So I could gut it too. Are you saying you drilled the holes down from each opening?

PP220 Muffler

Tm , to open the muffler , first I put several drops of thin oil around the area where the front meets the back and let it soak in to soften any carbon . Then I took a piece of wood that would reach into the muffler all the way to the front and while holding the back of the muffler I poped the front off . The holes I drilled as looking at your muffler picture are located three in a vertical line to the right of each louvre .

The cat cnvtr muffler I first used had the exhaust on the left rear if looking straight down. The exhaust was guided out the right side by way of a funky shield. The exhaust opening on the cat cnvtr muffler had an opening no larger than a pencil eraser. No joke, it was tiny and real restrictive!!!
This muffler is silver color.

The non-cat, open can type is black and has the exhaust opening on the right side of the muffler dumping it over the chain.

Hey guys, I know this is an old thread, but there's good info here. I have a 141 LE with the 1-piece silver cat muffler. I'd like to replace it with the non-cat version that seems to be on the 142. But they are like 30-40 bucks, even on ebay. Any idea where I can get one (even used) for cheap?

I believe the pre epa 41 and 141 mufflers will fit your saw. You'd just need the different aluminum plate that goes behind the muffler, the muffler bolts, and gasket.

I have a 141 which I put together from a few saws... I then bought a stock 141 muffler and all I did was pry that nickel sized stock slot open to about 3/8 across at the widest point. This mod also made a huge difference and runs way cooler than the modded cat cnvtr muffler.

Hey guys, I'm doing the same thing with my 141 LE. I removed the restrictive cat muffler and replaced it with the non-cat muffler from an older 141. Then I pried open the exhaust slot nice and wide.

Now I know that I need to adjust the carb. I think I want to richen it up by turning the hi-speed mixture screw counter clockwise, is that correct? And how much should I turn it?

Thanks.

Yes ccw is richer. The chainsaw service manual specs the initial adjustment of low and high speed mixture screws to be 1.25 turns open from the lightly seated position for the Husqvarna 41 and 36. This should get you close.

Ok, that should be a good starting point, but how do you know when you've got it just right? What should I be listening for? A change in pitch? Maximum RPM?

To continue the chainsaw service manual information: make final adjustment with engine warm and running. Turn low speed clockwise to obtain highest idle then turn back 1/4 turn. Engine should accelerate cleanly without hesitation. If engine stumbles or seems slugish when accelerating adjust low for acceleration without hesitation. Adjust high to obtain optimum performance under cutting load. Do not operate saw with high speed too lean as engine damage may result from lack of lubrication. Adjust idle speed screw so engine idles just below clutch engagement speed.

scottr, thanks for all the help. My little 141 LE rips now. It's like a completely different saw. It used to sound anemic, and now it sounds nasty!

I guess it's not really an LE anymore, maybe I should change my sig. :)
