My wife got me the Husqvarna Pro Forest Helmet as an early birthday present, as she knew I've been wanting one for a while. I got to use it for a bit today - I interrupted my splitting duties to drop a couple of dead ashes and basswoods that were likely to drop on the lane and block my neighbors access soon. I found it very comfortable, and I especially like the face shield screen - it doesn't fog or get smeared as it is only mesh. And I certainly won't be missed while wearing it, as that thing almost glows.

I have the one that Peltor makes. I've had it for about eight or nine years now. It works for me. I like how you mentioned the fact that the mesh screen totally rules out the chance of the shield fogging up. I agree. You can't have fog ups with your face/eye protection. However, my screen is starting to rust through and has developed a few small holes. I think the new ones are made with rust proof material. Time for a new one.

I bought a MSA helmet from Bailey's about 22 years ago (back when they still had a warehouse in Jackson, TN). After getting tossed around for 20 years, the screen finally got too distorted and cobbled together with zip ties for me to fool with it any more. Ended up getting a Husky to replace it.

Does anyone make a helmet/screen with radio headphones? I love the peltor worktunes and wish I could find them integrated into a sawing helmet.

A few weeks ago I was helping two friends take town some ash trees in a public park. The trees were down and one guy was trimming off the branches. Somehow, a large branch snapped and caught me across the side of my head. I was wearing only ear protectors, a baseball hat, and my prescription glasses. I was stunned, but no real injury. It took me a second to realize my glasses were gone, along with the hat and ear muffs. Somehow, my glasses ended up flying into his nearby dump truck - undamaged. I related the story to my wife when I got home.

She bought me the Husky Pro Helmet the next time she was in Lowes. I had no say in the matter:redface: It's nice and comfortable, and I haven't started a chainsaw without having it on.

Now I gotta find the money for some chaps.

I don't have a helmet, but I do have a Stihl flip-up screen. The peltor worktunes earpieces are a easy direct fit. If you don't find anything else, check out a Stihl helmet. It might just work.

Funny thing, people put off making a $75.00 purchase that has the potential to save their life or serious injury for monetary reasons. As someone who has fought the saw (and the saw won) I can tell you that the outlay for the chaps is far less than the cost of your medical care even with insurance.

I love it. I use it when weed eating and edging too.

Be sure to wear goggles or safety glasses under the screen as I have found that debris can be shot between your face and the screen.

Let's look at the reality of Chaps shall we?

Good pair of Jeans is 30 bucks. One good greenbrier patch or Honey Locust, and 30 bucks is gone.
Add long skivvies and a conservative number would be 40 bucks.

Say ya cut 10 times a year, and trash 3 pair of jeans. 90-120 bucks gone.

Throw on a pair of 70 dollar chaps and it's a savings of 20-50 bucks a year, every year, even without the bar chewing on your leg.

When the saw does chew on your leg, the jeans will be shot from the hole, and then the big Swedish gal in the ER that is gonna take her scary scissors to 'em, and that pair of long skivvies, your 3 dollar a pair socks are gonna be soaked with blood so they are gone, the 15 dollar shirt ya duct taped over the geyser is gonna be gone, and whoever drives you to the ER is gonna be looking for new jeans and a seat cover for the truck.

Then there's the medical bills, time lost from work, Meds, and replacing the knickknacks the wife is gonna hurl at ya for screwing up the jeans she gave ya last christmas.

Chaps are actually kinda cheap when ya think about it.

Stay safe!

I like your way of thinking, I wear chaps while cutting.

Just remember to lift the face screen when ya gotta spit.

Dadgum Copenhagen plugs up the mesh and wont wipe off worth a darn untill it dries.;)

I'm really happy with mine. Comes in REAL handy when cutting in the Breen brier and Blackberry tangles.

Stay safe!

+1

Flip then spit, not spit than flip. AAARRRGGGGHHHH! :msp_mad:

I own 1 pair of chaps , 4 pair of chainsaw pants , 3 helmets with visors and muffs , 3 pair of chainsaw boots and several pair of steel toe footwear . I have no excuse not to use any of it and I'm not comfortable without it .
I watch my local Kijiji and try to pick up any safety gear that I find such as the last pair of Stihl cutting pants for 30$$ and a new pair of Viking VW58 chainsaw boots for 50$$ .
Cheap insurance if you wear them .

If you get drunk enough before cutting into your leg you won't feel it so why wear the chaps. They just make you hot and want to drink more.

Just kidding.

Spit in the mesh?!? :) How many times will it take before I learn? And don't forget to pull the fresh lit cigarette out your mouth before slamming the faceshield down either. That's a fun one.
