Picked one up today for 150 dollars. Can't tell if the piston is cooked or not. I need to do a bunch of cleaning before I am confident enough to pull of the jug off. It is definitely in rough shape but hopefully I can get it back up and running.

I did a 394 about 20 years ago about the same thing. Really rough I did everything new top end bearing and seals on the bottom. The saw is in great running condition still today not much to look at. Had some money in it a little less than new after done. Just a life lesion that can be interpreted in many ways. Some would say just buy new. You just fixed the old saw. What did you learn? On one side now you are capable of working on a chainsaw with confidence. Our you kind could just buy a new saw and save the grief. And learn nothing. Or when you buy the new you will be more confident how to take care of it .

I am absolutely hoping to learn a lot more.

"Life lesion" I don't know if that was a Freudian slip, autocorrect, or intentional, but I like it and will be using it upon occasion. Thank you.

OP: enjoy your new project! You could easily sell or part it out and recoup your money plus some.

A little update. Got the cylinder off and the piston is cooked. Cylinder is salvageable though so that is good news. Now just waiting on money to get the parts.
