I should chime in that I rebuilt a 61 classic with an aftermarket cylinder (not a big bore) and it starts and runs flawlessly today. I had no choice but to rebuild it. Compression was down to 12o psi and she was struggling with a 20" bar. Now it has power galore once again and good fuel economy. Big bores tend to slurp gas.

Glad you got it up and running. Sorry if I bashed ya a bit hard but remember
if things don't fit there is a reason. Time to investigate or ask before damage
is done.
Apology accepted and it's water under the bridge. I'm also sorry I said what I said. It's just that, "for real" at the end of your first post got my blood boiling. Maybe you didn't mean it the way it sounded in my head. I don't normally post on forums but wanted to see if it was a common problem and if it was it might help the next guy that thinking about putting 52mm cylinder on an older 61. I'm not to proud to say I f@#ked up and hope that before someone else does the same thing they see what can happen.

Just in case anyone is interested in the compression, with and without the base gasket. Yesterday I checked the compression and it was to low, 130psi, even for a new aftermarket cylinder. This was with the base gasket. So I took the cylinder back off, removed the gasket and sealed it back up with Motoseal. This morning I went out and checked the compression and got 150psi. I wasn't expecting a 20psi jump but i'm happy with it. It should have a little more after a few tanks.

I've got a 51 and a 55 both with the same aftermarket cylinders on them, the 51 has a gasket and the 55 doesn't. I'll post there compression numbers in case anyone would like to now the difference.

I put together a 61 for my sister's husband 2 years ago. Was one I dug out of the parts shed, had been straight gassed.
He was relying on a trash picked Wild Thang for cutting their firewood, so wanted to set them up with something a bit more repectable.
Almost did a 390 Stihl, but the 61 was complete.

One of the easiest saws I've worked on. I almost kept it haha!

As far as the "big bore", I've been told by many that they aren't very good.

I did a 660 big bore. Tried selling it on here after having it a year or so and basically was told it was worth more with the OEM piston and cylinder (which were ok, just the spark plug threads were FUBAR)

Tested the 51 it has 140psi, (gasket) and the 55 has 150, (no gasket). They both need to be broke in. I have used the 51 a little, maybe a 1/2 tank and it ran really good with 140psi. I haven't done any cutting with the 55.

Pics? I did a 61 with Huztl parts, moved up to 268 but used the same carb, cause I'm cheap. The saw rocks but is an oil leaker. perhaps I need a new O ring that goes behind the oiler.
I was tunning the carb today so I took a couple of more pics

It seams to run good. I don't have any logs to cut right now but tried it out on some punky wood that was still solid in the center and it zipped right through it. I did push down on the bar hard and it didn't slow it down.

Where did you get this 272 Tecomec jug? I bought what I thought was a generic Chinese jug - box had made in China on it but jug is like yours...tt Made in Italy.

I spent about an hr with a file & emery cloth, on both of my new 52mm cylinders, till they slipped right in.
There are cpl threads about the doing this to the W/T 61 / 272upgrades here on AS.
(IIRC) the later Org / Gry top 61's are drop-in.
But a little elbow grease is needed for the earlier W/Ts...?
If you get it done, you'll likely be happy with the effort ;)
