i think the problem is people are using the wrong ladders. i have an 16 foot orchard ladder and a 10-25 adjustable foot forestry ladder. both have spikes on the feet to keep the ladder from sliding and both are wider on the bottom for stability. painting ladders and trees are just not ment to be unless your really comfortable with it sliding on you alot.

We keep a ladder on the truck. How else you gonna get on the roof to clean up etc? The problem is not using a ladder to get up a tree ....it is the person using the ladder.

Couple of quick stories...was once clearing wires for the township and a ho comes out and says how much to take of that limb (read leader) and pooped himself when I told him. We are past him on the road when we hear a scream, a ladder fall, the leader fall, and quiet. Part of the leader knocked off the ladder then he fell and then the butt fell on him. His is paralyzed in all 4 limbs and broken pelvis.

Another guy comes out on a windy day when we are pruning big trees. Again...."How much to....?" blah blah "that much, damn you, I'll do it myself"

We watch him go up a 40 foot ladder with no gear and a large saw, wind howling. He put the saw into wood and it kicked him back off his ladder. Emergency ward and inches from death.

Guess if I was cheaper, neither of these dudes woulda got hurt.

ps....just today we passed a guy on a busy street that I know is a fireman and has had a 60 foot stone dead elm for a solid year now and it leans all over his house. In the am me and Kyle in different trucks to a job passes him a half dozen or more times. At different times either of us saw him standing below the 36 foot ladder that was tied to the tree.....another time he is half way up....another time he is near the top with a rented pole chainsaw....another time he is back down on the ground rubbing his chin thinking about what to do or if he is gonna do it.

I told my gm if I hear anything big being cut I am going to call the police and let them decide if they want to stop him.

Slipping on your spikes sucks , bottom line but that top was nothing and that tree was a bean pole , sounds like he was cutting it with a electric turkey knife and what could happen anyway if you wearing a lanyard you CANNOT FALL , maybe chafe your junk and thighs a little but come on ........I have seen that exact scenario happens at least three times before ..

His face cut was way to deep.I don't think his saw was dull he just kept cutting deeper to match the corners. The wedge came out at the 1 min mark and looked way to big. You can see/hear that he barely initiated his back cut and the top came off out of control.
I was more surprised that some of you guys thought that top was to big and considered that pine a bean pole. That bucket must be stealing your manhood.

No need to be such a prick granola boy. Just cuz the dude isn't computer savvy doesn't mean anything.. maybe he can whip your ass in a tree for all you know. :)

take it eazy pappy, you better just sit back down in you rocker and sip your lemonade before you have a heart attack:)

deffinitely still learning

I ended up having to go to the first post to view. I'm digging this site! You guys are a riot. Thanks for the laugh.

Looked to me like the top layed into that other tree on the way over, pushing the butt back quickly just before the hinge let go causing the rough ride.

Side note: When you ARE directly behind the backcut AND you don't make the face cut wide enough AND you are close enough to other trees, you COULD have that butt jump right into your lap. Not sayin this EVER happened to me or anything, :) just sayin...

Good point that I try to pass on too. All it takes is a little branch on another tree that does not want to give when your top hits it and you could get hurt real bad or killed.

I like to try stuff out like that when I am up there and can get away with it (tied into another leader). One time I looked at a leader over a park picnic area that I was fairly certain would barber chair. The natural tie in would have brought the climber right down on the cut area to make it easy.

I tied into another leader and made the cut so I could sneak outta there. The 24" dia (ash) 50 foot lead (up at about 60 feet) barber chaired and the butt came right down on where I was standing. Woulda had to stay there if I used the obvious tie in.
