BAck when I was dispatching for the county, me and another senior dispatcher suggested that a 'local resource' volunteers list be maintained with contacts of people willing, able and with the proper equipment, to help out in such emergency situations. My name would have been on the top of a list for anyone needing help with down trees. The suggestion went nowhere.

In my county, the local EMA (NOT FEMA, the county-level) has established a Community Emergency Response Team - I've thought about joining up, but am leery about getting tangled up in the inevitable politics and general cliquines that comes with it. Here's the State link: http://www.serveohio.org/CitizenCorps/cert/cert.html

NEAT!!

that would never happen in BC canada, the municipal govt and provincial govt and the unions would cry foul. And as far as "Cliquness" , we have the North Shore Search and Rescue, Ski Patrol or Urban SAR, all which dont like any volunteers, unless you are "one of them" :buttkick:

you cannot even clear leaves away from the storm drain grates outside the building (on the street), without the local city workers screaming up in their trucks and yelling at you. Tis better to let the street flodd and have the building damaged by floodwater than take away their precious work.

Then, when they get swamped, they beg for help. Vancouver radios were broadcasting a plea for residents to go muck out the drains in front of their houses last week. Sheesh, go figure,
After a week of no power Bamfield residents finally see some light at the end of the tunnel as hydro crews were barged in this morning. Guess it is a real mess up there too and I just heard our weather prediction for tomorrow, more high winds, oh joy (not).

Sorry SRT-Tech, don't know the names of the city contacts. Probably not hard to find out if you call the district.
