Unfortunately, this saw is not in my possession. It belongs to a good friend of mine in Germany. I'd grab one of these in a heartbeat if I could find one. He was kind enough to send me pics of the saw and didn't mind if I shared them.

For all intents and purposes, this saw is mechanically unchanged, based on these pictures. IMHO, that's a good thing. The mods I developed for the original 261 to turn it into a monster will still work!

I just can't get into Stihl saws...

Isn't the 362C II already here? When is the 261C II coming?

I wonder if Stihl is losing enough market share to the 550/562 that they needed to take action and are enticing new customers with the perception of "new and improved".

Who would want the old heavy version once the new, improved, lighter version is available

Most have no clue, and the 261 isn't a big seller so there is plenty of old stock. Most also move up to a larger saw if they spend that much, Everyone else buys a farm boss.

My German is a bit rusty, but the Stihl fact sheet seems to say it has a heated handle... am I correct? Stihl hasn't sold their "Artic" models here in years.

It also seems they are playing the paper horsepower war: power has been upped from 2.9kW to 3.0kW. Has the saw any true technical difference to account for it (ignition timing?) or is it simply a case of bragging rights?

Finally... these saws have never sold well here. People usually go the extra mile and just buy a 361/362. Same for the 441: people just pay a bit more and get a 461. Given Stihl's "Haggling and discounts are the work of Beelzebub" policy they are going to sit on a large pile of unsold saws for quite a while.

Both of these saws are new.
cut time is equal, 261 vs 550. I think bigger log and bar should sort out if Stihl 3kw claims is true or false.....

550 and 2253 has been a huge seller in Norway, I dont expect anything else when it comes to 261, it will sell well, but they have some serious work to do with their pricing before they will suceed. XPG/WH only cost 30$ extra while Stihl demand 100$ extra, so Stihl is totally outpriced.

I expect to soon see the MS 261 mkII over here in Norway, I am more currious to feel how the saw balance in my hands compared to my JRed 2253WH, it wasnt the weight of MS 261 mkI I disliked, it was the body shape and handling that I hated.

MasterMind has already had the MS362 mkII on the table, interesting reading it was for sure.

..... .

They have always offered the model with or without heating in Europe (called VW, not Arctic - but it is the same thing).

It seems like the VB factory isn't making WW/Arctic versions of any model, for some odd reason....

Yes - they may have removed the insult, but not the injury - and I doubt the new and superlight clutch cover is a really good design?
