Installed Non limiting coil on 372XP; any tricks?

going off of memory, 98 was the last production year for the 371, but I have seen a few 99 models out there as well. I haven't checked the differences in the timing of the coils, but the 371's seemed a lot stronger to me than the 372's. Of coarse, the one ring models probably had a slight advantage

Have you tested a one ring piston in a 372 ??
I have a one ring in my 372xpg, but am interested if there is a "power" difference between the one and two ring versions !?!?
 
The non-limited coil I just installed was an '03 from a 371 supposedly. I didn't know the 371 went that late, but that's what the seller said. The part is stamped 03.

There were no 371s made in 2003, only 372s......

So, should I be concerned with the grinding sound and sparks flying out the side of the flywheel? I thought the McCulloch stamp on the coil looked suspicious for a Swedish saw!

I really feel its a coil off of a 372 made in '03. I could get the numbers, but I don't want to take the side back off again. At this point it could be a Mac coil, and I'd be fine as long as it runs as good as it does!

You guys got the lucky non EPA stuff over there....

I have not tested them side by side in stock form, but the modded ones seem to run better with the one ring. I have one ring pistons in all my 372's too. Husky changed the price of the pistons about a year ago from 38 dollars to about 80 dollars!!!

Now you're giving me indigestion. I've seen about a million posts from the Stihl guys hammering Husky for only having one ring, and them performing better out of the box but losing power as they wear in versus the two ring Stihls. Then many Husky guys came back stating Husky's have two rings.

Are you saying the single ring is a better design?

Don't read too much into it. The single ringers run a tad better, but not worth tearing down a motor to swap them unless you are gonna race it...

Hands down, the double ring setup is better for longevity.
 
theres no doubt! there is less drag coeficent in the single ring setup, consider single ring (proper end gap ) a tad loose fresh cylender, (new) not honed, 18 grams removed from intake skirt, (ported window) a straight low end. (not baggy) the 97/98 early run coil (hottest map) (cometic gasket companys) custom base gasket from dead soft copper,( less gasket deforming, crush ect. and red lines kart race oil two stroke pre mix 40.1 they last very long!and spool up the power very nice.ive spent way to much money messing with those over the years, (had a blast!) but that was a improved stock setup that worked very nicely over the years for me at least.
