The first pic looks like it might be water oak. The second looks more like red oak. Red oak has a thicker bark than water oak. Though I have seen red oak with a thinner bark than normal, water oak bark is particularly thinner on the limb wood. The trunk bark of water can be thicker and look like red oak. I think red and water oak are very similar and are possibly in the same family. They both smell the same except the red oak has a stronger smell then water oak. Water oak is a mild form of red oak. Water oak is a lighter in color then red. Pull some bark off and look at the underneath part of the bark. Red oak is gonna have a red'er color then water oak. Water oak is almost white in color and red oak is red'er in color. Could also be a hybrid of water and red. I think red and water oak can cross breed. See the blotchy mold growth on the smaller limbs on the bottom of the first pic. Thats typical of water oak.
Could even be Shumard or Nutall as well.

Actually it burns OK. Dry's fast, burns kind of fast, but throws off pretty good heat. I never used to burn it for firewood because I have several farms full of dead Oak I can cut. But, a couple years ago I cut down a bunch of them around my shed, dragged the tops down to the burn pile and cut and split the rest. I was surprised, it burned OK.
