E-bay'ed a McCulloch 797 from "saw-king"...it arrived and today I had a couple of minutes. Cleaned out the carb & air box area....put in gas...bar oil. It started after a couple of pulls with the compression release on. Turned off the compression release and its idling fine....The bar oiler works too. I'm a happy e-bay customer. It arrives with a new 404 chain & clean looking 36" bar. Big saw.

I tried a 3ft log and it fourstrokes&boggs with the entire blade in the cut. I'll try and lean it out but my bet is a carb kit is in order. Since it idles nice AND the piston looks clean through the exaust AND it pulls over real hard without using the compression release; I'm guessing the internals are fine.

Where do I get that "krinkle" looking black paint for the cover? Whats the best match for McCulloch yellow from NAPA?

Anyone ever try putting a foam filter material over the stock filter? I have a slab of "UNI" brand filter foam....think I will try.

How is the best way to pull those flywheels? Is there a McCulloch specific puller? Fun stuff ahead for these old saws:)

I'd sure love to see some pics of this saw.
As far as the paint goes theres a thread in the used equipment forum here that should give you the color you want.
For the foam filter, I've done that on a PM610, no loss of power, no negative effects and it worked out fine, go for it.

weime,
I used to work in a manufacturing plant that applied the black wrinkle finish. It was a powder coat and it was so durable it couldn't be sanded off even when chucked in a lathe. We actually had to machine it off. There may be another type of wrinkle finish paint, but I'm not aware of it. If you know someone (a friend that would do it for a 12 pack) that can do the powder coat, I would go for it. Later, Roger.

McCulloch yellow paint

I saw the big Mac on e-bay,and was tempted myself, but already have about 20 or so to restore. The closest match to McCulloch, yellow that I have found is OSHA safety yellow,Valspar#21945.Purchased at Tsc.I am encloseing a picture of 2 sp 125s and 1 sp 105 painted with this paint.Al

I can hardly tell the difference between the original MAC paint formula, and the osha safety yellow.
Well done Al. I like seeing an older saw look like it just rolled off the assembly line.
