I had a pile of scrap aluminum and a tig welder at the shop so I decided to make a mill for a good will projects.

I've been building a nature trail at a local church along with fellow AS member CADDGUY. We cut down some larger pines that I decided would make better benches then firewood. Here are the pics of the mill loosing it's virginity.

Cool staining on the pine log! REP sent!

One question: What, if anything, did you put on that fresh log to keep pitch off the person about to sit on it?

Scott (pitch butt no fun) B

I plan on dumping a mix I have used before on stuff that is outside. Marine varnish cut with mineral spirits then add a little drying agent to help with humidity. It doesn't take too long to dry hard with japanese dryer added. I save old varnishes that are not suitable for furniture type projects for this kinda stuff. I will post pics of it once I find the time to get out and flood the wood. If someone sits on it and gets stuck with sap, at least we will know it is being used!!
Of course diesel mixed with used motor oil is a good preservative, but it has two immediate drawbacks....ruins clothes and not environmentally responsible. lol

There is not too much sap left in that log. It's probably been standing dead for a couple of years.

My main concern is doing something so the woodpeckers don't have a field day on it.

I didn't realize you were concerned with birds? There's plenty of dead standing out there without worrying about a few pecks here or there...it will more likely rot first where it is sitting now.
