I'm in the mood for another saw. You know the type, something old, something bold . . . . doesn't have to run, just needs to be fun.

Anyone have one of those for sale?

Yeah, his saw looked mighty pretty. I wished I wasn't torn with so many hobbies and ADD....my life would be so much easier. I think back to my 20's when I was loggin' ......everything could be loaded in a travel trailer that I owned and on to the next timber sale. What the hell happened??? Life was a whole lot easier then......:dizzy::laugh:

Glad you had a relaxing 9 days Robin!:clap: I couldn't resit.....Harbor Freight had one of those mammoth sale days and I made the 120 mile round trip pilgrimage. Bought their best USC to play with. Read up on the model's faults and a lot of the pros rather than put aggressive liquids inside the tank, use a beaker or a glass jar and suspend that into the tank filled with deionized water-you keep the levels the same. That way the chems are confined to the jar. Some folks have even done that with freezer bags with success. They said this unit most likely fails because people use caustic chems in the tank and/or they pour out the fluid by tuning the tank upside down. Supposedly if you do that on this model, the solution will make its way to the internals....no matter how careful you are. Said to just evacuate the solution out and not pour anything. Makes sense with this unit and the cheap tank. Cost was so small, I can use this as a primer before I buy a really nice one like yours.

There was also the repeated caution that you should attempt to clean the carb FIRST by either dipping in carb cleaner or spraying cleaner.....that the USC wasn't strong enough to clean out severely clogged passages?

Kevin

Great for carbs Kevin. I think you will find it a great asset. (You can also clean dentures at the same time for extra income).

Hehe....I think I'll pass on the denture thing for now, Tim. But I used to work on clocks....as if I don't have enough hobbies....and these things have always been the method of choice for cleaning a whole movement. I have a 1906 cuckoo clock movement dying to take a bath in there. I quit working on watches because it's too hard on my eyes, even with magnification(loupes). I have an old Vibratech cleaner(was supposed to be for rifle & handgun brass) that I've used for yrs with various solutions....a far cry from a USC though. So I figure before I croak, I'll get into the world of USC's. Still in the box for now....but I'm hopeful.;)

Welcome back Robin!!! And yes, a sweet running 90 would be great!!! Just reply to our PM thread when you're ready.

Hmmmmmm . . . Harbour Freight you say? I may just have to stop by there tomorrow on my lunch break.

Use their super saver store coupons....better than the item coupon itself.

I've never had a real dirty saw carb internally....I guess because I'm fanatical about keeping the airbox clean. Even in the woods, I had a 12volt air compressor and portable tanks. Blow out the airboxes at lunch and again at night. Never had a carb fail me.....just seemed to make sense. However, I've BOUGHT saws so filthy that I couldn't even see how many hrs they had, until I cleaned them up. It just amazes me how dirty they let the airbox and the saw get. It's like;Let's see how dirty I can get my saw before it quits on me!

Brother, if I could take the time to clean a saw when I was loggin'....where time is virtually your pay, then anyone should be able to stop and clean a saw before the gunk finds its way into your carb and/or the jug.

WOW, I just had a visual of this hulk-like man roaming the great northwest lugging a massive chainsaw so heavy his knuckles swelled to 5 times their normal size and strapped to his back was two air tanks and a car battery.

It didn't go nearly as easy as I had thought..........quite a struggle actually......got it running pretty good then it stopped oiling????? The internal oil line had popped off the oil pump nipple way inside the oil tank....Grrrrrrr....managed to get that fixed.......had the carb apart 3-4 times....intake manifold off...new NOS gasket there......ran better ....still not right.......off with the flywheel.....removed the points and polished.....Dean had them really good...nice and square, matched etc.......replaced the dented condenser with a NOS one........everything came together after that.....started easy and ran great this afternoon.....gonna try a fresh cold start tomorrow morning....third pull is my bet...we'll see...I've put three tanks through it now......pulls that 24" with gusto.....dig it in ...just gets louder...don't slow down......gonna be a real good runner Dean........ compression test in the morning too.....OH...and that is spruce pitch you smell....not pine.....24" dia.....perfect for that 2 foot bar...big chips.......dust just in the air....LOL!!! Jonsereds since 1954....just like me!!!....LOL!!!

Not quite like that....I had a '62 Dodge military ambulance that I tooled around the woods in...it had the compressor and tools. And I had a '78 Ford truck hooked up to a nice travel trailer to live in at the site(if there was room). But....the saw was big and the bars long. Bailey's used to sell a leather pad that went through your suspenders....so that you could carry your chainsaw on your shoulder....the bar went on the pad, the saw was sideways and you palmed the bar down as you walked with your right hand. Worked like a champ....couldn't imagine doing it any other way.;)

Depending on the day and being quick to get the choke off...generally my 80 and 90 will start on the second pull. Cold stuff starting outside and it might need three. Leave them in the hot sun though and you're in for a real treat!

Glad to see that 90 finally throwing some pitch around!! If you have the need, it will run a 32" bar just fine. The 80 maxes at 28"

I've never run anything any larger than a 20 around here, so I'll stick with the 24 Windsor I have until I get used to it.
