Jonsereds 2040 Turbo

I have bought my son a used 2040 turbo last year at a yardsale. For what he does I thought it would be fine for him to learn with, it is his first saw.
I went out to where he was cutting today and he is having aproblem I have never encountered. At first when he described it to me I thought that the sproket may be worn out and slipping. But when I tried it i could see that is not the issue.
When you rev the saw it sounds fine but when you put it into the wood she will only cut if you slightly hold up on it.If you even let the full weight of the saw rest into the cut she stops turning the chain. It acts just like you have the chain pinched it gets that restricted rev you hear and the saw just will not turn the chain untill you lift the bar from the cut.It sounds like it just has no balls at all.I remember when I first cleaned it up and got her going I thought that this saw is not peaking out and I need to adjust the High speed jet a little. But if I remember correctly you cannot adjust it at all. The sproket is not slipping the chain is tensioned perfect it just acts like you grabbed the chain with a pair of Vise Grips. it just runs out of power it just will not turn the chain in the cut.I have owned and run saws all my life (for 35 years) This year alone I have rebuilt 12 partner 5000's and 500's a Farmer 55 a R517 and an, a 55 also, A remington SL9 and a remington Super 75.So although i am a novice compared to some of you guys I am not new to saws .But this one has me stumped. Thanks for any help you can give.

You can adjust those carbs, or you should be able to. If the saw has compression it is definitely a fuel issue. Look at the fuel line, impulse hose, filters, etc. That saw could be close to 20 years old so it might need a good tune up with the fuel system. If that doesn't do it, then you might need to look for air leaks elsewhere.

Speaking of Jonsereds, has anyone seen those 81's on ebay? One is the legit model while the other I think is an 801 with a missing sticker. I think the only difference between the 2 is the sticker anyways. LOL. Either way, I am not paying $600 for an 81.

Late on this one but I have a 920 cylinder and flywheel if anyone is looking.

Tim

If the top end is toast, I wouldn't buy it unless you needed parts. They are nice saws but finding parts for it to rebuild is going to be a pain and expensive. If it were me, I wouldn't pay more than $50 for it if it were complete. You will have a VERY hard time finding a top end that is usable and reasonably priced.

That hose is the vent for the fuel tank. There should be a bronze fitting in the end. You will need a 5mm hex wrench to get the head bolts out of the cylinder. Like Cantdog mentioned, clean the crud out before you try to loosen them. I find that if you put a 3mm hex wrench in there and spin it around that it usually clears most of the crap out.

Jeff, what's the compression measure?

I have no idea but it looks and feels new,so the comp in my opinion is quite good.
I may have found an issue. The muffler opening was almost closed up maybe a 3/16 opening.I pried it open to 3/8 or a tad more.
Berore that though I did adj the low spd about 1/8 of a turn and the High 1/4. The low speed will not move much about (1/8 both ways) the High spd about a 1/4 total. So yea I guess you could say it can be adjusted but not very much.
The L spd has a Blue plastic cap ( limiter ?) that stops you from getting much out of it. I tried to remove the carb but after the 2 allen screws were out it still was hung up on somthing that I could not see .So the carb stayed in place.
Then I went to the Muff but I could not remove that either I took off the two bolts but it still would not come off.I assume there is one more bolt inside the Muff ? but I am not sure.I could not get the front of the muff off to look inside. So that stayed on as well but I did open the outlet some.
Now it does run a lot better cut about 10 cookies of apple and poplar. There is a big improvement. But I really am not sure what did it?... the small amt of adj or the Muffler opening? What do you think? and how does the muff come off and the carb come out? These sm homeowner saws i have heard can be a pain to work on I guess this one is proof.

Hey Lee I did see those 81s......the one with the sticker would really clean up nice.....but alas, the starting bid is beyond the available funding......the other, more beat one....really made me chuckle "This saw was running fine 18 yrs ago" LOLOL!!!!!!

I saw them too. How funny is it that TWO of them would show up the same day?
But it will be a tough sell. Us vintage JredHeads tend to be a little che....I mean frugal.

Looks like there may be hope for many more 49 sp's now. Just saw new aftermarket piston kits on the bay.

Yep I contacted the seller and got some info....made in India....they are crowned the same as the stock pistons..not flat tops...I am going to order one and risk the $35.00. I don't hold much hope as far as quality goes but it is the only new piston I've seen for these since Jonsereds stopped selling them@ $75.00. I might be pleasently surprised......or not. Anyway I'll give it a shot and report back after I've looked it over, measured, smelled and touched it LOL!!!

Hopefully they turn out to be usable. It definately falls into the "beggers can't be choosers" categorie. When I saw them the first thing that came to mind was, what did they use for measurements? Maybe they scrounged up a nos piston?

Hope so....I ordered one last night and it should be here next week sometime...I've found that sometimes cheep pistons, though the bore size is good the width between the wrist pins bosses can be excessive. I will most likely use Caber or OEM rings on this piston....provided it's good enough to use!! I dunno..the pic looked nice!!! And the guy was very responsive to my questions!! I'll be the sucker and risk the $34.90 cause I gotta know.....if this should work out it would be great for the many 49SPs out there with beat pistons!!!

Well, if they smell OK I'll be buying a bunch of them!
