I've read reference on this site in past to you guys stateside putting law signs on your customers lawn, which is unheard of here in australia, at least as far as tree work goes. I was wondering how you approach it and how the customers response is - do you ask them if you can leave it there for a set period of time, say, a week? Do you offer some kind of discount or is it just something that people are willing to do?

Do you ever get the feeling when you ask people that they really weren't that happy with it but said yes just the same? I'd hate to create bad will among existing customers since we get more work from word of mouth than what I would imagine would come from lawn signs.

I don't use mine often enough. If it is a friend, or a customer who is obviously very happy I'll ask. I tell them if it is in the way of mowing just stick it on the side of the house out of the way and I'll pick it up soon.

I love lawn signs. I take them to the range and they work great for holding targets.

With that said, Limiting timeframe and arranging pick-up best all around.
Years ago a roofing contractor asked to put one up while they were doing repairs. As the "punch list" for fixes grew I decided that advertising their marginal work not worthy the advertisement and took their sign down. My stance was that having their sign reflected my positive recommendation of their work and questioned my good opinion. Maybe signs need to include a handful of extra RANKING stickers to be added by the homeowner after work is complete; Great, Good, $uc]{$

ATH, I used to buy the screenprinted poly signs with the wire wickets, less than $5.00 apiece as I recall. That way my customers didn't feel so obligated. They could pitch it right after I left if they wanted, but it was amazing how long some would leave them up. They really are effective.
