That's great! The boss must have given you excellent training, maybe some mentoring, and you guys came with the initiative and work ethic. Well done and far from the norm from my experience.

Besides, I lend my stuff to mates and they lend their stuff to me!

If one of my guys car is broken down I'll let them drive one of the work trucks home as long as they put some fuel in it from their own pocket. They are all on the insurance policy anyway. I'll let them use their saddle, their rope, and a climbing saw for doing things at their home or parents/siblings home. If it's a big job we just give them the friends/family rate and the whole crew takes care of it. No side jobs with company gear. I haven't had anyone violate this because I think they really like being able to do stuff around their houses without having any expense other than fuel/oil. My guys are pretty good about taking care of gear though. I can see how this wouldn't work for everyone. In the past three years one bull rope has gotten knicked twice at the end, two web loops have gotten cut, and the big shot has gotten left in a backyard once. That's it gear related. The employee that left the big shot felt bad enough about it he drove his car over to the jobsite on his own time to get it. I'd say it really depends on your guys as to what you can do.

For a small operator like myself its easier to just have a policy of not loaning out saws- they cost too much(hard earned) money and time in maintenance to just let be loaned out and possibly thrashed.... I have friends calling on a semi regular basis asking to borrow a saw and I explain that I have a policy of not loaning them out and refer them to a local hire shop. If I was OP ide be pretty pissed off as thats sounds like disrespect pure and simple

want to hear something funny. the local ace hardware calls me and ask if they can borrow my small engine specialty tools lol.
