Thnother thing I would say is that I am no fan of the UAW. One of the worse unions out there...
Even so, we have to be honest when discussing this stuff.
Where are people making 90k/year without an education? If I knew about that kind of work I wouldn't have gone for M. engineering!

Lots of places. Most mines, power plant and refineries. I'm sure there are others, but these are what I have expiereance in.
We have 280 people making well over 6 figures(shift diferential, OT built into schedule, etc). No degree required, but many of us have them.
I actually work with an engineer who has the same title as I do.
Full rate plant operators make more money than entry level engineers most of the places I've worked.

What’s the benefit package ?

43 an hour to sweep floors ? Sounds a little out of the norm.
401k, cash balance pension, full, medical including dental, vision, hearing, annual performance bonus, clothing provided, $800 boot allowance.
To be clear the $43 figure is for operator trainees off the street. Laborers make closer to $33.

Mines/power plants/ refineries are all garbage places to work though these days. Unionized work places are like a heap, they just attract the flies.

Well I can of beg to differ on that. If it were not for those places you just mentioned, you wouldn’t have a lot of things. Gas and fuel for your car, truck, heating for your home to keep your family warm. Electric for your home, unless you’re off grid and someone had to make that. Mining for copper you use is various things. Other things that are mined you use. Someone has to do it. So I really don’t think I would call them garbage. I reckon I made a pretty good living out of being a garbage man. I am a retired boilermaker, I help keep your lights on and everything else run by electric. Just saying

Garbage? How so?
Mining can be dirty, but the other two are pretty clean. Sounds like your just salty guys make more money than
lol not the work, I mean the lifestyle and atmosphere. I am not salty about it but now understand the wages. Working in those kind of plants is a sure way to waste your life making money. If I wanted to make 300k+ I could work oilfield as well but I have standards lmao

I don't mean the work itself, I was talking about the lifestyle. I have lost too many friends to drugs and alcohol and other abuse due to that style of work. Its a chronic issue due to the type of people who work there.

I work day shift Monday- Wednesday one week and Monday -Thursday the next. Work with a pretty good group of guys, both salaried and union.
If I want to work OT I can, but usually dont.
The atmosphere is pretty good IMO.

I think you have a very skewed idea of how these industries function. We get regular drug and alcohol tests. So there are no druggies. The hard drinkers are no more than any other group.
What you describe may apply to oil drilling, pipe lining, construction etc.

Clearly you work in a much better environment than exists in the boondocks. If it was like that up here it would be different. If it was so well regulated here it would be a totally different matter. And unions here are the slowest possible moving things that exist. They cost so much most businesses are moving away from union work because it costs too much and not enough gets done.

Can't comment on Alberta, as I believe oil and gas is basically guys living in man camps.
But the point is its not like that down here.
I think I'd rather slit my wrist than work in Fort MacMurray or Prudhoe Bay.

EVERY car of EVERY make and model is poorly engineered today.

I just quit 14 years running a shop doing that, and small engines. The automotive side burnt me out FAST. Between the piss-poor engineering & parts layouts, bad new parts right out of the box (sometimes taking 3-6 new parts purchases before getting a GOOD part and that's OE from the DEALER!), hours and hours of sitting at a desk pouring over wiring diagrams trying to make sense of all the B/S, and the costs related to these over-engineered toilets (constant obsolescence of very expensive scan tools and special hard tools, not to mention expensive annual updates, monthly fees for service info, etc.) it became not worth the effort anymore. There are easier, less stressful ways to make a buck!

Now my newest car is a 1994 model. I have zero use for bullS!*T!!

They have problems also . My son works at Acura he got out of the mechanic side and is a service writer . His average day is jam packed with repairs and he says 40-50 is major warranty work . Hey it’s great for him because he makes bonus every month . He works overtime too because of the amount of work .

The luxury brands are some of the worst. All that bling is just more crap to go wrong.

There is nothing you know that I could not figure out. I've being dealing with very complex systems comprised of multiple pieces of complex equipment my entire career.

I base my opinions on actual performance buddy. You on the other hand are an emotional wreck that bases his buying decisions on brand loyalty.
O.K. So design the synthesis of a complex organic molecule. And implement it's production on a large scale. Let try desparlure. The gypsy moth phermone.

Tell me what sort of equipment you would use during each step, and detail the synthesis You design. Write a detailed experimental. You can use starting materials containing 3 carbons or less.

If you finish that one let's try a simple peptide like leucine enkephalin. Use amino acids as starting materials.

Boy that's impressive. However, you still can't figure out a simple modern chainsaw...
Your such a smart scientist how about you tell me how you would go about making light cycle oil, gasoline and olefin from a feedstock of de sulfurized gas oil with a bias toward making max LCO. When you have a rough outline figured out I'll give you the quality parameters and equipment limitations.
