Hello all. Hoping this thread is in the correct forum. I'm a small landscaper in Northern Illinois (mostly DuPage, Kendall, Kane, & Will counties), and part of a new job this spring involves taking down a black walnut tree in a back yard in Downers Grove, IL. It's a healthy tree, I'm estimating 18" or so trunk, but the homeowner has a son who has been recently determined to be pretty allergic to walnuts, so the tree must go. I'm linking a few pictures below. The walnut to be removed is the tree next to the plastic kids' playset, and gives some perspective of its size.

The tree has an every-so-slight (but beneficial) lean in the direction it needs to go, no obstacles surrounding it other than a fence on the opposite side of the lean and some tree branches of other trees 20 feet away or so. I do have a stump grinder, chainsaws, and some people interested in the trunk and remaining firewood, so I would be doing the clean-up myself.

I'm not insured for felling trees, and have grown too conservative to take on that risk - even if it appears to be an easy job. If it were my yard, the tree would be gone already, but it's somebody else's yard, so I need to sub this out. I'm just looking for an idea of cost to have it felled by an insured pro, and I figure this is a great site to locate one. The homeowner is a friend of mine, so I'm not looking to mark up the cost of having the tree felled.

Any ideas on how to proceed with this sub-contract? Anyone interested?

Slayer is in your area, so is prentice, they maybe able to help. I would be about 6-700 on that. 8-900 with cleanup.
Good pics.

Alright....here's what we are going to do. Slayer, Prentice, and myself are going to take care of this for you at an affordable rate we can all agree on, under certain conditions.

First, you are going to call Chris Greene at Affordable Tree Service to come out and have a look at it. You tell him that you'll pay cash up front, whatever he needs, at that time and he can do it anytime he wants in the next couple of months.

Second, no need for you to show, we’ll be there to greet him.

Third, you know nothing.

Fourth, we'll take care of the tree, and you can join us at the nearest establishment for responsible celebratory consumption.

Deal? :msp_wink:

This may be in jest officially, but it's not a bad idea.

I am SO in on this.

That tree would be on the ground and all yours in an hour. less time than it would take me to get there. I'll PM my #.

Thats funny, too funny. Im down with the clown. Sorry I got here late. It'd take me and Slayer longer to drive there than it would to kill that twig. Walnuts are easy, good hinge. Looks like theres almost enuf room to drop that sucka. Wish I could get 900 for that. Up by me the toothless junkies would do that for 350-550 all day.

EVERYBODY here would do it for 400 - 500 $$ :dizzy:

Real easy tree......

Trees too easy to fight over, why break a sweat? lol

Id have it down already, but no one seems to remember my Walnut alergy thread from a while back. Those things could kill me, and not in the quick painless way Im looking for....LOL - I'll help, I'll get it down, but this guy needs a local. I cant drive that far for a twig. Dont wana insult the guy but my cut wouldnt justify todays gas cost. 2 weeks ago I'd be the fly on chit but now? Do yourself a favor, hit Slayer up. Anyone else on this bee-otch aint worth beans(in north Illinois, besides me).

welcome to AS mkblackmart ... forget all these clowns :D
that's an easy one... do it your self

hey you gotta get wet some time...

I bid one yesterday almost the exact size but next to a swingset for 200 or 300with the brush and got underbid... I should have known better than trying to get that kind of money for a twenty minute job!

Wow, that's crazy pricing. I just signed 2 small ornamental, no climbing at all, couple pole saw cuts then lay them over, no bigger than 6-8 inches, will back chipper right up to them. Getting $350, will take 1/2 hour, start to finish.

Nothing wrong with that....we're businessmen, not hourly employees. :D

Looking at the pics that tree doesn't look fellable in one shot without getting it either tangled up in the neighboring tree or putting one side of it on the roof of the house and it also looks like it could reach that deck on the side of the house. Does anyone ever look up when determining weather a tree can be felled ?? I don't think so in most cases. I get calls all the time from people saying a tree can just be dropped but they don't see other trees in the way of the felling path or wires and what not. They have seen too many lumberjack shows where somehow a magical notch is cut into a tree and will miss all the targets in the landing zone.

That tree looks like it needs to be climbed and skinnied up a little then felled. The guys here have it nailed about an hour or two should get it down to the ground.

Walnuts are foolers they are are always taller than other species when a ratio of stem diameter is applied to the height. That tree looks to be about forty to fifty feet tall. Stem diameter is correct at about 18 inches to 22 inch on the high side. No big deal though tree is an easy one for an climber that knows his stuff.
