Thanks for all the responses on this. I especially like the idea of having Chris Greene come out for an estimate - his craigslist ad led me to this forum in the first place. Got a good idea of cost, and treeslayer will be hearing from me.

Looking at the pics that tree doesn't look fellable in one shot without getting it either tangled up in the neighboring tree or putting one side of it on the roof of the house and it also looks like it could reach that deck on the side of the house. Does anyone ever look up when determining weather a tree can be felled ?? I don't think so in most cases. I get calls all the time from people saying a tree can just be dropped but they don't see other trees in the way of the felling path or wires and what not. They have seen too many lumberjack shows where somehow a magical notch is cut into a tree and will miss all the targets in the landing zone.

That tree looks like it needs to be climbed and skinnied up a little then felled. The guys here have it nailed about an hour or two should get it down to the ground.

Walnuts are foolers they are are always taller than other species when a ratio of stem diameter is applied to the height. That tree looks to be about forty to fifty feet tall. Stem diameter is correct at about 18 inches to 22 inch on the high side. No big deal though tree is an easy one for an climber that knows his stuff.

Its always hard to tell from pics, I shouldve been more specific. The back limbs gotta go, and maybe some under cuts to cinch up the crown with a bowline and then drop her in from about 15 feet up. Everything changes if Im there looking at it. Could be quicker, easier, or harder. Dont think it would take 2 hours tho, thats nuts, or you work with slow pokes. Wow, that's crazy pricing. I just signed 2 small ornamental, no climbing at all, couple pole saw cuts then lay them over, no bigger than 6-8 inches, will back chipper right up to them. Getting $350, will take 1/2 hour, start to finish.

sometimes we get lucky, but you gotta wade your way thru a lot of #### to get that one that makes you laugh all the way to the bank. Ive had $700 hour long jobs with just me, no employees. You huff and puff to get it done but end the end KA-CHING!!! Just sucks waiting for the good one when toothless Joe-Bob and Hose-a-b-and c got there first.
