I burnt about 4.5 cords (99% wood heat)last winter. I have already burnt well over three this season. My last fire last year was JUNE 6, so I have a long way to gooooooooo.

I think my problem is I split and stacked 5 cords before winter even hit, and didnt really think twice about it. Last year I cut wood all winter to keep up, sometimes I would get low and "ration."

Fortunately, I had some good brotherly help over xmas and we put up about 2.5 more cords of standing dead ash... This winter has barely even started. I hope I make it. I may need to cut more:clap:

The story of the ant and the grasshopper plays true all the time. Even for me I will have to dip into next years supply. That will be over 3 cords for me if it stays colder for the next few months.

I am worried about running out of wood also. I am just finishing off my fifth cord and I have about 3 more after that. 7-8 is what I'll usually do. I was hoping that I would be where I am now in a couple of weeks but I'm that much ahead -at least. Its -10f right now and that doesn't help with the wood conservation effort -I'm blowing through it like I'm burning matches.

the problem is though, when im the grasshopper I find a way to get by with less. When Im the ant, I burn like the supply is endless....:dizzy:

This year I brought in 6 cords, split, dry, and stacked. Four are almost gone. Looks like collection time in late March or early April in order to get through. Heckuva winter shaping up, and it just started three weeks ago. Good grief!

I start cutting around 65 degrees (mid october) and cut all I can till it gets cold.
Then I use the motto "cut at least one load every weekend it's decent".
This allows me to not worry about it during the bitter cold weekends or the wet and sloppy weekends. The wood cut pre heat season gets me through the winter along with the wood cut during the winter and I don't have to fight it.
Occasionally the urge will strike me to cut even on a cruddy day especially if I see an easy target while out hunting or something.

that has been my plan this winter, and it has worked... just shocked at how much wood I burn when it is here to burn.

I've threatened to cut during the summer but I'll admit that 70 plus degrees and mosquitoes just doesn't get it for cuttin wood. Just can't bring myself to drag out a saw after april. A cold beer by my pond just is tooo relaxing.

I did the same Ed. 6 cords cut/split by April last year too season all summer. The way my barn's wood area is set up, I can usually count on using a row a month untill January Then the backwards L shaped storage area hits and I have 3-4 rows that are 1/3 longer again than the others. These are my primo wood also. I just started into the long row of primo a week ago. If these cold temps don't let up I'll continue on the one row a month but I don't think the -24 like this morn will hold more than a few days? As it looks thus far, I'd say I've used a bit more than 1/3 or say 2 1/2 cords of the total. This should get me through too April (end of) when I can fetch some eastern larch (Hatmatack) I left outside in large chunks too suppliment. Unlike previous years though, I'm quite a bit behind on next years rounds.

:agree2:

If we hadn't had all the Global warming we wouldn't be going through the global cooling right now.

Heck , it all runs in cycles. Some cycles a little higher, others a little cooler. In the last several thousand years it has been warm enough to survive. Unless something drastic happens I'm pretty sure thast isn't going to change, much.

I'm just glad I 'm not burning in an open pit at the front of a cave opening. I've used about 1/3 of this years supply of 4 cords. I did bring in an extra cord for my use since I had the oppurtunity early this year get ahead on the wood gathering. Honey-do lists did tend to cut into 'me time' running the saws.

Ya, know what ya mean last year I thought we had plenty stacked by the boiler and in March we found ourselves out in some real crappy weather cutting wood, kinda ruffled my pride. No worry this year, if we run out of wood I QUIT!!, LOL

As it looked around here back'n November

I went through a whole truck load in the last week. I have some big stuff that I need to cut up and split but was going to save that for next year. It's not a big deal because I just go out find a dead tree and cut it up bring it home and burn it. Next year though I WILL have my supply cut, split and stacked BEFORE I strart up the OWB. It's a pain in the arse to search through the snow to try and find my wood when the truck gets low.
