i'm hesitant to put this up because of the results of the hd2. I think the oil residue left over from the max flow held the saw dust. But then again that would mean that saw dust does indeed get under the hd2 filter. With out the oil residue there, I assume it wouldn't get stuck and just continue to flow under the filter.

Anyway I am going to re run the hd2 single tank again with a cleaned air tank manifold with no oil residue on it and see what happens.

Anyone else notice this much build up on their 661 hd2 filter?

As far as the build up on the filter itself. Max flow has 30 tanks on it and hd2 has ONE. Gotta hand it to max flow. I'm impressed.

there is oil on the manifold catching the dust. so if no oil residue on the manifold then it wouldn't stick and look as bad as it does.

So if the oil wasn't there, we wouldn't have the opportunity to see what the hd2 isn't catching?

I fail to see a downside, & I will be ordering more maxflow kits.

well the way I see it... yeah if the oil wasn't there it does mean dust gets under that filter. So the only thing keeping the saw from sucking the dust up is the rubber ring's ( on the back of the air filter) tight fitment over the manifold. Obviously it works. But it sure seems like a poor way to design it.

But let's never mind that for a second and talk about the issue of how much dust is built up in the pleats of that HD2 ...in just a single tank!!!

the new filter lock design on those saws is ****. me thinks the maxflow being foam takes up a touch more space and puts a little more pressure on the filter against the filter base plate. mine did the same thing stock and i sold it before i could look into it. a buddy inland BC does something with an ms180 part to put more pressure on the filter. i'm not sure what part that is. maxflow kits are a no brainer IMO. it's just a matter of where your cutting and what time you have. to clean an HD2 in camp would not be cool. stihl guys just run the HD2 and ignore the fines passing lol

The max flow around tank 15 looks like my 66s around tank 3 with the hd2 & the sock.

It seems pretty obvious to me, but who am I? Petey Pablo?

Nope.

HD2, not my saw lol

I have used the hd2 filters in many applications and never seen blow bye like your pics above, I'm with Brad that something is fishy with your saw or filter or installation. Not trying to throw stones at you, but these results are not typical in my experience.

it's not the HD2 itself, it's the pressure that is put on the HD2 by the filter cover. i never had a problem with any other saw with an HD2 either. the 661 lets fines by though. only someone burning more then a couple tanks a month would know. so in other words, not that many people on saw forums lol

I have a co worker at the firehouse who's family owns a lumber mill and he select cuts for many lumber companies as a contractor all throughout Ohio. He runs primarily a ms661 all stock with the HD2 filter. He is the best woodsman I have ever seen and a great mentor for me. We have cleaned our saws together on many occasions and I have never seen his saw look like yours above, something up.

For reference my buddy burns 5 gallons of fuel a week weather permitting, when the skidder can pull the logs out. I know some fellas run their saws even more than him, but I assure you he is no slouch. Works his saws hard and takes VERY good care of them. Last year he played around with max flow filters on his ms660 and ms460, these are his backup saws, but I'll check for an update.

You yourself sound like an accomplished woodsman and I mean no disrespect when I saw, something is up with your saw/filter.

Hope this helps

Actual air filter is vibrating during use. It is loose in the box. Just one more example of fit and finish not being very good or install error. Not a fan of HD2 however any saw can look like that with a loose or mal fitted filter.
