Ya i know i should get one but they are not cheap and the extra time in cleaning and mucking around puts me off.

Then i need one for the 461,660,880 its all to hard

That is not normal. Either the filter is defective or was installed incorrectly.

and you guys didn't think I explored this further?!?!?! don't ya know me well enough now, to know better?????

try it again..

now with a modified cover

now with an even more modified cover

ok how about a different filter?

Looks like you have narrowed down the suspected bits, height and squareness. The rubber seal has to flex into place in order to work and it does not look as though it is being or can flex enough to lock in.

Look at the mounting surface that the filter sits on and has to be squished into. This would all be easier with the locking button removed from the rain boot. Being a click lock instead of a threaded rod means you either get to put stuff between the top of the filter and the lock or around the base of the filter, or order a new carb box cover and bits.

Put a bit of bar lube around the inner surface of the rubber seal where it meets the flange and as you instal the filter burp it and slightly twist it a bit before looking it in place. Push it on and pull it back slightly, push it back into place. If the saw was fine until it was used in cold temps this might help. Your saw seems a bit excessive in its filter bypass.

Make sure that the oil ring lip in the filter is not torn or rounded over. It does not take much to make it a leaker and running it loose will do it. Check the mounting surface area for little flaws that damage the seal. As the filter paddles back and forth the little cut or rounded over area gets bigger and chunks start flowing by. Stop the saw and all you will see is a little tear or rounded over area.

Or fix that Stihl with an AM filter.

No, I do not own a 661 or use one, or hardly ever see them anymore.

I just bought a ms661 c-m. One tank of fuel through it. I will inspect the fit of the air filter closely. The saw, once broke in, will go on a Granberg 36" mill. The stihl rep i talked to in regards to the air filter said a sharp chain shouldn't produce fine dust. I didn't want to push the subject so i let it go.

Just my 2c here .... do yourself a favor and get the max-flow ... if you are doing a lot of cutting it will pay for itself right quick by eliminating down-time of the stop drop and tap stock filter dance ! Make sure to use a good tacky oil and apply liberally to the foam element ... I’ve gotten Many Many tanks worth of cutting and No fines/dust get into the firing chamber ... the stock setup is not very robust - why risk dirt getting into the engine ?

You are quite welcome sir ! Lotta info / testing on it on this site - don’t cost nothin to read it...

Meh. I've got the Max Flo and the HD2 and I see no difference. No fines get by in either case. Will probably sell the Max Flo ... HD2 works just fine.
