Guys would really appreciate any thoughts you have on this little mystery. I picked up my 740 today after a long round trip. This picture is the original owner Gary, holding the original manual, parts catalogue. Next to the saw is the oil canister from the combo oil/fuel tank (fuel container cracked about 30 years ago) and the Mcculloch file guide that came with the saw.
Now Gary was a really straight shooter and says that he got the saw new from a little town called Lucindale in South Australia in about 1965 - he says the saw is completely original. Now have a look, it has the starter on the left hand side and if you have a look at the video posted (gone into slo mo as my daughter was videoing!!) it has a odd "half" steel full wrap handle. Anyone that can shed any light would be really appreciated. My suspicion is that this was an export model of the saw, maybe an Australian special addition?

Curious question for you, seeing you are from Australia, Is like every animal there trying to kill you? I hear it's a deadly place haha

The only animals that will kill you here are a great white shark or a saltwater croc and that's not a good way to die. There are a lot of animals that will maim you and cause you a lot of pain, but really - only couple of people die per year in Australia from animals. Snakes and spiders scare you but they wont kill you.

That's good to know, not that I'll probably ever make my way down under haha

None actually, they haven't made it this far north. But armadillos have, they are few and far between but they are here.
Interesting.

We used to never have possums but now have a few.

We now have turkeys up to northern MN but still about 60 miles south of my cabin.

Occasionally we get grey squirrels but assume they are dumped at the end of the county road by city folks who live trapped them.

I got my pro Mac 700 to run a little before fouling out the plug again. I think I need to run it some more, to get all the gear oil out of it. ( I know I shouldn't have used gear oil as assembly lube). Anyways, I want to get a new spark plug for it. Acresinternet show the correct plug as being an ac Delco CS45T. Which crosses to a NGK BM6F or champion DJ8J. Is this correct or does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

I'm afraid that they are on their way up here though. Destructive things.

I'm particular to NGK myself but any of those should be fine.

Can you just clean up the existing plug?

Rebuild kit for the flatback and tank gasket get here this morning. After fixing hole in tank it fired off but was idling high...couldn't tune it out. Pulled tank back off and gasket was ripped. Will have it back together this morning. Hopefully make some cuts today. 36" .404 chisel skip got here yesterday. Oregon fat belly bar.

I like AC plugs but they are hard to find.

The only spark plugs that have just flat out failed for me were NKG. I have had good results with Champion, the only ones I buy 10 at a time.

DJ8J are the ones DJ6J will work as well.

Thanks! I will see if they have AC plugs. They will probably have Champions on the shelf. I had a McCulloch PM610 once with a dead spark plug. I don't remember the brand of plug tho.

I think I've only had one or two saw plugs actually fail over the years.

When I worked as a marine mechanic we had trouble with Champion plugs. But in any other application I've never had problems with any of the major brands.

Tree monkey made a great point once that plugs should be changed out every so often because older ones take more energy to fire. Makes sense to me.

The pro Mac 610 that had a dead spark plug. Someone had replaced the fuel lines and the spark plug and it wouldn't start. They guy said he was tired of fooling with it and had no idea what could be wrong. I got it out, checked for spark and it didn't have spark. I tried another plug and it had spark so I used that plug and put some fresh gas in it and it cranked on the second pull.

I have a Kawasaki ATV and it wouldn't run worth a crap, I put a new spark plug in it and it ran great.

Btw @svk did you have any luck with the super xl ?
