Be happy if you get the correct filter cover bracket in your stocking. LOL

To follow up last evening's discussion, I pulled out three 10-10A's and a 2-10 today and measured from the tank to the stub as Tim did and got 2" on all four. All had the same typical 10-10 filter. Two of the 10-10's were 600002 models with 14 prefixes with the third being a 600002B (or 26 maybe?) with a 15 prefix. None of my 10 series IPL's cover those to compare bracket numbers with the ones we've already discussed. 2-10 had a Mac carb with the stud instead of a bracket, but was still a 2" offset from the tank.

What does seem to be common between both the 66681 and 68807 bracket numbers are they both accommodate the same 66774 air filter and both accommodate same 65813 cover nut. That would seem to indicate they should interchange since the threads are the same and the offset from the tank would need to be the same for the same filter to fit both brackets. Who knows what the actual difference in parts may be. My guess at this point would be a production/manufacturing difference in material or method.

That brings up the possibility that the bracket on your saw is neither of the above and is not for a 10-10 application or there is a whole other fitment issue yet to be identified. I do know that if you're not careful aligning the filter and cover that the fuel cap can get in the way and not be all that obvious when you're focusing on getting that stud up through the filter and cover when it doesn't line up. Don't laugh. It happened to me today while going through my 10-10's. Thought I was onto something! I was. The fuel cap.
OK,thanks for all your help Pogo.As I said last night,I've got another bracket coming from Bob Johnson.I hope to get it by Fri.or Sat.& hopefully that'll be the answer to the problem I've had here.If only the moron wouldn't have taken the tag off the saw, things would've been much easier for everyone all the way around.Merry McCullochmas!

The saw I measured in the photos was attached under the rear tank hold down bolt which would explain why a lot of them went missing. Maybe that's why they changed to riveting the tags to the tank.

On a lighter note...I went out cutting with a couple of Macs today. The weather here in W.N.Y.was bright & sunny for a change.I took out my Super 10-10 for the first time since I got it fixed.I bought it back the first week of Oct.When I got it of course it didn't have any spark (the seller on Ebay lied to me,imagine that),so in orderr for me to check the points I had to pull the flywheel.Easier said than done.I had to buy an impact driver/drill to get the nut off.The points were so tarnished that there was no way it could have spark. After filing & gapping the points I had good spark. Then one of the pawl rivets broke. As it ended up,I bought a whole new used clutch because when I tried to get the broken rivet out,the spider broke (I'm not making this up).I took a different bar off a 2-10 that I had laying around that had a roller tip on it & put that on the saw.Previously it had a hard nose bar on it.Finally it was ready to go! I thought I'd have to wait till spring to test the saw out,but the weather gods smiled on me today & I was able to test the saw out.The auto oiler even worked well.
I also brought along my Eager Beaver to try out the oiler on that as I'd done a repair to the line on it last month. The manual oiler works fine, but the auto oiler isn't working.I suppose I'll have to find out what's going on with that. But,I got the wood cleaned up out of the farmer's field,& I got to play with a couple of Macs today.

Well, gentlemen. I actually got a great runner off of ebay. The seller did not lie nor did he know everything about what was sold. Its great!! The other day i was the winner of a SP81. It arrived today! I did the usual look see and found all the flaws and such. To my surprise it had but 2. The sawdust guard was missing, as usual. And the rear bottom brace is broken held on with tape and a stick under it. Made me laugh. So i got busy cleaning. Not all that dirty either! Points were set correctly, and clean. Is this a joke i thought. Surely its not gonna run? Right? So after more cleaning and checking...i decided lets put it back together and give it a shot. Fuel leaking everywhere!! Little teflon tape to the rescue. Fixed. Lets try it again...3rd pull it pops!!! No way!! Great compression. Great spark. Next pull its a runner!! Unreal. I was excited. Dont need a carb kit, or piston, or cylinder. Thank you lord above. So ive got a sp81 with a 51a fixed h jet carb, shorty clutch cover, and half wrap handle. And it runs great!! A call to my friend bob and for 25.00 a new base is headed my way. It came with a 28" sprocket nose bar....for a homelite. A little file work and it shall oil perfectly. Also had a homemade double falling spike that weighed a ton. They are gone. What a great saw, that actually runs great. I didnt have to adjust the carb either. Its got lots of snap and truly great top end out of the cut. Cant wait to try it out tomorrow if it doesnt rain. I just wanted to share my excitement with folks who may agree. Cause my wife doesnt...lol. have a great day and great holidays fellas.

Congrats, I believe I was the runner up in that one ;) I was thinking that the handle was broke there, I've got one that was broke like that as well.

Good job Vinny! I'm surprised you didn't end up with a lemon, like it usually happens to me on Ebay.Lol I've found that if you whine to the seller about broken parts they'll usually refund a few bucks.Hey,it's worth a try, right?I saw your SP81 on the Bay too,but I've got a ton of saws already & just as much work.Congratulations! Enjoy!

I'm sure this subject has come up somewhere before in the last 1519 pages, but here it is again.

I got on a 10-10 air filter part number investigation today after searching for the 66774 air filter referred to in the filter bracket discussion and finding absolutely nothing. What I did find were what appears to be the more common part numbers (91456, 89458, & 86397) for the later filter(s)? with the plastic domed center that are basically non-existent as NOS, aftermarket, or even used. All of my IPL's show the 66774 number and filter up until 1973 which is the latest IPL I have. Anyone know when the later style filter was introduced, and why there aren't any available anywhere? You'd think Stens or someone would be selling repops by now considering how many 10-10's are still out here running..., and all of em probably needing a new air filter.

I do actually have a 66774 filter in one of my 10-10A's with the other two having the 89458 type filters. Here's what I believe to be the 66774 filter as indicated and illustrated in the IPLs I have. Fortunately, it's still in very good condition as are my other 89458 type filters. Sure would be nice to find a source for any type of replacement filter that would fill the need for the 10-10's and 10-10A's, not to mention all the other early 10 series saws that used the 66774 filter (or a variant of it). Seems like they'd be easy enough to produce.

I agree, got lucky this time for sure. Great running saw. Im surprised. Thanks

I'm gonna go out on ac limb here & say that the 66674 filter became obsolete after the PM 10-10 came out in '75-'76,or shortly thereafter. It's getting even tough to find a PM 10-10 fuel tank to convert the old style 10-10's or the other 10 series saws to accept the 69924 filter.Eventually all the PM 10-10 tanks will be gone & whoever hasn't converted will be up the creek without a paddle.I cringe when Bob Johnson tells me the horror stories of how McCulloch sent so many parts to the landfill simply because they couldn't find a buyer.A buyer probably could've bought those parts for pennies on the dollar. It's sad to say that we're a nation of waste.

Well its raining here again so i didnt get a chance to cut with my new sp81 yet. Not big deal. But i did get a picture and i have a question about the year it was made? Can anyone help me narrow down a year on this based on serial number? View attachment 691719 View attachment 691720

Nice saw you got there. I see a mac or some Mac's in bits under the bench there looks like a new cylinder are ya building a nice 1 up? Looks like a 70cc?

Can anyone help me narrow down a year on this based on serial number?

The highest 14 prefix 600438 model number IPL I could come up with was for an 'E' suffix. You would logically assume a "J" suffix would be a later saw which would put it closer to the end of production than the beginning. Interestingly though, when looking through the 1998 Mac Publications Guide, the same 92265-A or (-01) IPL part number seems to be used for all SP81 IPL's from 4/73 until 2/77 (or thereabouts).
