Hmmm tempting indeed. I'm hoping a little clean up n she be good
You got alot of grease in there for points. Id clean it up really well with electric cleaner and maybe wash the felt oiler in dawn.
If you can imagine the two tungsten points are arching across a very small space ,when a drop of grease gets crooked in there they can misfire pretty easy.

From yesterday a bored out junk cylinder to this evening a functioning 850 engine block with lots of compression! I gotta get the fuel tank ready. It leaks at the seam. Tomorrows project. I also got to rebuild a carburetor for this one. A few more fasteners to locate and final assembly. Then its a matter of fireing this one up. He told me to take it easier on this one...lol. dont run it like its a rental! Tomorrow ill try to post a video from work. Much better internet.

One Giant step for Mac kind!
Excellent work!

Ok here goes, the 20" bar that came on the 850 is .404- .063 sprocket nose. I swapped this and the sprocket to the 700. The chain is down to nubs. I filled on it anyway, cause yeah I gotta try it. Cutting on petrified hard ash. No problem for the 700.
Is there any reason why I shouldn't run the bigger tooth wider gauge chain on the 700?

Next question. What brand of chai is recommend? Just looking for a decent full chisel chain for cutting hard drive firewood.

Thanks for the advice!

I like to use a good semi chisel chain for my firewood saws, they seem to hold an edge better when I am cutting several tanks of fuel between touch up or swapping out the chain. .404 chain will tend to hold an edge longer and has fewer teeth to sharpen when the time comes, but also cut a wider kerf which means more work for the saw.

Many will tell you that Stihl brand chain are the only ones that will cut, but I really like old Carlton or Windsor chain if I can find it. I have not used any modern Oregon .404 so I cannot give an opinion on those, I have use 3/8 Stihl chain on many saws and I don't find it any more productive than a good or Carlton or Windsor chain.

If you're only running a 20" bar, .404 is fine. As for chain brands, I've run Stihl, Oregon, Carlton, and McCulloch chain and I gotta say, I don't notice a difference. The old Stihl chain files a bit better, the new Oregon cuts pretty well, the Carlton I've met is hard as a frickin' rock, but in the wood I can't say I notice a difference when I've sharpened them.

I have a couple Oregon semi chisel chains , only because that's all my local guy had left to make up. Yes they do seem to keep there edge longer in the drive dead trees I'm cutting! I'm just use to the the full chisel (the rip ass factor)
Your key words if you can find it. Where to look online?

Frawley's saw shop has pretty good chain deals from what I've heard.

Hello everyone! I am getting closer to tearing into my McCulloch Super 797 and get it back to running condition, however; before I do….I would like to have a Engine Gasket Set in hand before I start turning wrenches.

Problem is, It doesn’t look like there are any available for this model (OEM or Aftermarket for that matter).

Question: Does anyone know where I could get a Gasket Set for my saw?

Much obliged!

I run .404 on alot of old saws, for semi chisel I use Oregon 27AX and 27AJ (skip) for 36" and above.
For regular cutting and felling I use #59 or #68 which is the same. Ofcourse due to the rarity of .050 guage .404 I'll use what I can find .
A 7/32 file works well on most .404 but I prefer a 1/4 file on it .
Old Stihl work well too ,but any micro chisel or semi chisel is gonna be tough and works well in dirty hard wood.

Alaskan - I don't think you'll find anyone offering a gasket set per se, you will need to look through your IPL and identify the gaskets you need then go looking. EBay seller gotfishon43 has a good selection of aftermarket gaskets available but may not have everything you need. The o-ring behind the crankcase cover ((PN 104523) is a standard dash 036 o-ring and should be easy to find.

Thanks for the points help lads. I haven't sanded them just paper and it seems better. A slightly blue spark. Not a big fat 1 I'd like though. Might need a sanding.

Have done some cool things to these but yup points are scary.

How do these chips wire in and where do I mount it?

I'll see if it runs better atleast its a blue spark.

It's idling up a bit pto side down it could be crank seals but have had a few carbs do it too. It still has a nice 4 stroke on the throttle on its side.

Could well be crank seals too It's old and unopened and compression is starting to get down. If I forget the decomp after it fires it generally won't bite me too hard. The 850 definitely will so its due for a rebuild.

That 850 looks good Vinny. An LRB piston again? I see its got the SP oil pump
