There is some Ad memorabilia on ebay that I saw last week and it answered my earlier questions. The Super 250 in the Ad is exactly what mine looks like full wrap and the bar which measures 22" from fuel tank to tip. I'll get the correct top cover eventually as the saw did some work this weekend, so it deserves some love. The chain still needs work but I'm getting closer to where it should be. It starts first pull on choke without cutting off before I get the choke pushed back in and oils the bar well.

I think the starter cover for this saw should be black. I plan to paint it so when I find out for sure and when I get the right top cover I'll paint it also. I plan to leave the rest of the saw's yellow paint as is since it's in pretty decent shape.

Several months ago i asked if anyone had the bottom bracket for a cp70/cp55 chainsaw. This mounts to the engine and also the av of the saw mounts here. Odd looking piece. Also the small metal piece that mounts to the coil and the flywheel rear screw mounts to. Several guys replied with numbers and inventory checks to no avail. I finally saw one listed on ebay this morning and was able to buy it!!! I contacted the seller and asked about the coil plate. They had it!!! Great seller who said they appreciated my purchase and she threw the coil plate in for free. I will be putting together a cp55 this week!!! Ive got all the parts now...atleast by the weekend. Just a good outcome from an ebay seller. Typically we write about negative experiences and i had a good one from this seller. Listed for cp70 parts.

My 1970 super 250 has a black starter cover with the late model McCulloch logo on it.

The Super 250 and the 660 gear drive normally had the long black cover with the extra holes.





I think there were some early Super 250 models produced in Canada that had the long yellow top cover. I don't know if they were the juiced 87cc version or still 80 cc.

I see a Stihl in one of his pics too so I'm leaning towards no. But, he's been here a bit so maybe we should keep him around on probation until @heimannm makes a ruling one way or the other. If he posts any more off-brand pics while he's on probation we ban him!

Did you take an initial compression test reading on the LRB one ring piston?

One of my PM610s had a flaw in the crankcase bottom casting as well. Plus some strange pitting. Thanks for sharing your findings. Something to keep an eye out for on future projects. What a PITA to diagnose. At least you got the mystery solved.

Not yet but I will before I pass it along. To my feel it was not spectacular, but the gauge tells no tales.

The Ebay Ad I posted above had McCulloch 1971 at the bottom right corner so maybe this saw is an early model, just going off the Bar paint scheme.

12 and 12A are later prefixes circa 1970 according to one of my IPLs. Was going to check the tag on mine but don't have a ladder and helper handy to get it down!

All three of my Super 250s have a yellow starter. Every one that I have ever seen has a yellow starter. Mine all have yellow clutch covers too, but I have seen them with black. All that I have seen have the black top cover with the extra speed holes drilled in them, fully black handles (often not full wrap) and the black plastic dust screen on the starter. Being marked A12 on the underside of the engine seems like the easiest way to consistently pick them.

@heimannm So this may seem to come out of nowhere Mark but I couldn't help but notice out of the saws listed on your signature line you have a sp85 and sp118. I have never heard of those saws but I can imagine how they may look and how many cc's they put out. What's the story on those saws? Were they prototypes or produced in another country?

The 118 is a Dolmar 166 in yellow clothing. I think the 85 is a Dolmar 133. Sold in Australia as McCullochs because we trusted Mac more.

Anyone know where to get the clutch side crank seal for a PM60? I already have the larger starter side seal but can't find the other.
