Happy New Year to the Mac group!! My '79 -80 era Mac Cat needs a new check valve for the gas cap, or another cap, as it leaks when I run it on its side. I am also wondering about a replacement bar. Do any of you Mac experts know if there any aftermarket caps, duck bill valves or bars that will fit this saw? I have a soft-spot for this saw and want to keep it going. It's nice and light, has good power for its size and I've been using it lately for my carving 'experiments'. It would be neat to be able to find a carving bar for it if there is one that will fit.

Yep, on most accounts. Duck bills are easy enough to come by, bar mount is an A318, not common, not rare. Carving bars may be hard to come by, all I see in the catalog is a .95" radius nose.

K.C. - I have had good luck using the little red Homelite (oiler) duck bill to replace the small McCulloch duck bill valves in a lot of applications. It may require enlarging a hole or making the counter bore a bit deeper depending on where used. I expect there are any number of options as Jeff has mentioned.

madrone - virtually any muffler from the D-44 through the 895 and 797 will fit. Those from the 1-70/1-80 Series and 700/800 Series most all will have the third mounting screw inside the muffler, same goes for 550 and Super 550. There are several different sellers on e-bay right now with NOS mufflers for the 700 series saws which will work. Bob Johnson also has some (607 638 9297) of the round ones, not sure if he has the rectangular style.

30" Bar

Not really, it measures 30.5" from end to end. I guess it's a 26" maybe? Anyway, I was wondering if I could put it on my Pro Mac 700, and if so what kind of chain should I use? Here's a pic of it.

You have a 28" bar, I not sure if it is .050 or .063 gauge. I personally run 28" bars (.050 gauge) with a 3/8 skip chain Oregon # 72JG.

I'll have to go out and check the gauge, I'm not sure what it is. I posted the numbers on the side of the bar on AS somewhere and didn't get a reply as to what it was. I think it will fit a 600 series saw though.

some great photo's since i've been to this sticky, thanks all and happy holidays.

I'm working on an old beauty of a 1-86 gear drive. Should run great after I get the flatback rebuilt (mac-9 kit on the way).
I can't wait to put on the original 42" mac bar running 1/2" pitch.

The muffler is pretty much thrashed on the saw and I'm wondering what options I have for a replacement. Will mufflers from other saws fit this one? Part numbers?
Thanks.

Sweet saw, I have the 1-85 that i need to get running.
As Aaron stated, Nice set of H+S dogs.
As for a muffler, Check Ebay # 360383547133 Not a bad
price for a brand new muffler. I bought a couple just to have.

Mactodd, I am in Saltillo. Right outside tupelo. Just let me know what you have. Might be a good motorcycle ride to tuscaloosa.

I might have to throw some stuff in the tankbag and get the scooter out for some excercise!

Thanks! What an interesting saw!!

Enjoy

I'm very taken with the design concepts of this saw!! How many did they actually produce and are there any/many that still exist?? Are they/the existing ones totally "unobtainium" now??

I grew up around yellow as my first chainsaw memories are of my dad's Super 33 or 35 style saw. I'd sure like to have that saw now.......just as a memory of what he used to use when I was a tyke back in the very early 60's.

It is certainly one of the most sought after saws for the die hard Mac collectors. I would say it is right up there with the 797 and SP125 in desirability, but much harder to find both because it is older and also because they were recalled and a lot of them were turned in to McCulloch dealers and destroyed. I'm just going from memory here ( a dangerous thing for me to do, LOL) but I think it was due to a potential overspeeding issue. Some one will correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks Jeff & Mark! Mark, are the Homelite duck bills readily available?

Hello Jim,

Thanks for sharing your memory(s)/perspective on BP-1. I guess the only way a guy is going to end up with one is a 'garage/barn find' where the saw hasn't been exposed to the die hard Mac folks. I'd like to hear more about how they ran........interesting that they had a potential "overspeeding issue" . I wonder what RPM that constituted and if they turned into gernades after reaching that overspeeding RPM!??? :msp_confused:

PS.............just learned a bit more here; http://www.brytek.ca/cscc.nsf/ed1d619968136da688256af40002b8f7/378fb4451b521bbb88256b6100149cd3?OpenDocument

Amazing that it was only a 44c.c. saw!

Aaron and Lee, thanks for the input.

KC, the Homelite PN is 69451, Stens # 610-345. If your dealer orders them, its a 10 pack. Retails for around $2.

Went out and did a little more blasting...

Found this under the gold paint someone had sprayed on...

Yellow paint... hmm... wonder what this part came off of? :D

I got started on the slightly corroded oil tank assembly shortly after I took that pic. This soda blasting is working pretty good. I am happy with the results I am getting. It'll take any paint that is not original off quickly, and as long as you don't sit for too long on the original paint, it doesn't really do anything to it.

It does take time since this A&H baking soda is very fine, but it leaves a finish that feels like glass on any non corroded areas.

Heroze, I failed to remember to make a short video on soda blasting. I'll get one made tomorrow when I do some more blasting, if the weather allows me to go out and blast, that is.

Sweet! Thanks for the info, I will get some on order. I also found a replacement cap for something Ryobi today at Home Depot that had a removable duck bill. It was $5 so I went ahead and bought it to scavenge the valve from. I will check with my local dealers to see if they have them or will order.

I really like the old Mac saws, as they were the first saws I was ever exposed to and I used to race karts with Mac 91a and 101 motors. Just a shot of nostalgia for me and I'm totally wanting to locate an SP125 that I can play with! (anyone got any leads? ;) )

Rep sent!

.. keep an eye on Lee .. he has more 125-flavored Macs than anyone in North America.

You may need a very large railroad bar or some plastic explosive to pry it from his hands, though .... :hmm3grin2orange:

(Sorry Lee, just could not resist the *** ..:) )
