Ok so the OSHA guys stops by the job the other day. Dosen't help he is my neighbor but any ways he was saying that he wants to see us where some sort of chainsaw protective shirts. I said you are nuts those things are hot and let me tell you it gets hot here in NC. So he procedes to tell me about these shirts they are mesh and have chain saw protective pads in them in the vital areas. Anybody have these are seen them? Looking for some info there sounds like something that could be a more pain the butt than a help. Just curious trying to learn here.
Thanks
Jared

screw that. its not in the regs, he's just playing on the fringes of the 'due cause' clause. tell him to cite you or leave you alone. next you'll be working in a metal suit of armor. pretective equipment is no substitute for safe work practices

:stupid:

I've got one of the Husky chainsaw shirts, and it is mesh. I got it this winter so can't say for sure, but it's pretty bulky in the shoulders and I don't think I'd want to wear it when it's too hot out.

I wear a Stihl protective shirt with mesh on bottom. it's bulky on arms and shoulder. to protect you must have layers.... no way around it.

sure it's a PITA to wear, as with all protective gear.

no problems in winter.... have not used in summer yet. looks to be really hot for summer wear.

it should be your choice to wear or not. not mandated!

Thanks I know it is not in the regs and so does he. He is just trying to be a PITA and is asking us to where them. Not tell us, I told him, I will look into it but I have no real plans to buy one unless one of you guys say they are fairly cool to work in. I sweat looking at a picture of the desert so I don't need anything else to cause me to sweat more. Keep the opinions and information coming

I have a Elvex protective vest, but I only wear it when I'm doing overhead work and take it off as soon as possible. It's too warm to wear unless it's cold outside. Comfort does have a role in safety!

I wear my chaps all the time, but I can't stand to have my upper body insulated when I'm working in anything other than cold weather.

tell his higher ups that he is harrassing you to wear items that are not specified in the regs, and that could create a worse problem (worker heat exhaustion), leading to possible multiple Workers comp claims. He'll back down after getting soken too by his superiors.

He might just be trying to cover his butt. You never know, maybe somebody got hurt and filed a complaint or sued for someone not enforcing a regulation. It's all about covering your butt anymore. Blame it on the lawyers. They ruin everything. I even had a lawyer tell me that. Or maybe he's just a pain.

It's not in the regulations for him to enforce, so it sounds like he's just a pain.

he is a pain I know this. He is my neghbor talk about a real pain imagine him everyday asking you questions. It gets old real old. Sometimes I wish he would just DIE! No I don't but it feels like that somedays. Just looking for ideas and opinions. I am tired of my arms getting torn up by branches so I thought if the mesh shirts were cool then I could kill two birds with one stone. If not then I will continue to wear my thin long sleave T-shirts. Easy to wash and somewhat protective. Thanks for all your great ideas.

A great solution in search of a problem, as a smarter person than I once said about chainsaw protective boots. I think that accident statistics show 90% or more of chainsaw accidents involve the left leg, and most of the rest are "one-handing" cuts. I think you picked a PITA neighbor.
