I'd like to see someone running an OWB right in Detroit. There's so many vacant lots on the D nobody would complain about the smoke. You could get all the wood you want by cutting up and burning vacant houses. Might have to dodge bullets when you go out to load it though!

Thats a great way to clean up Detroit. Unfortunalty It is alot of work to burn wood so that would never happen in da hood.;)

Hell, I am planning a trip out of state to get a decent stove, no boilers here, because we already have these rules in place. All I can get around here are pellet stoves or worthlessly small CARB approved stoves.

I have a friend that just moved to Los Gatos (San Jose) and was fined for using his Webber charcoal BBQ. It turns out that wood burning stoves and charcoal grills are banned by the local air resources board.

And that is one of many reasons that I would never move to Cali.

Can't grill?? I would have to move, I just grilled a tri-tip tonight and almost skated to my Weber sitting half buried in snow (not anymore) wouldn't have it any other way! Thats a perfect example of crazy rules and regs. I hope it doesn't get that bad around here don't like it already! Happy New Year

I think it is only going to get more restrictive.

Burn ban in effect in Yakima County
Yakima Herald-Republic
Use of wood stoves will be limited during a burn ban that is expected to last through Wednesday in Yakima County.
The Stage 1 burn ban was announced Monday afternoon by the Yakima Regional Clean Air Authority. It's expected to remain in effect through 4 p.m. Wednesday, but conditions will be re-evaluated before then, according to a news release.
Under the Stage 1 ban, all outdoor burning is prohibited. Fireplaces, uncertified wood stoves or uncertified stove inserts may not be used unless they are the sole source of heat. Certified wood stoves, certified inserts and pellet stoves and inserts may be used.
The ban does not apply to the Yakama Nation reservation, which is governed by the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

The government wants to regulate everything. Most homeowners with an OWB or indoor wood stove know what they are doing. When will it end?? Yes polution can be a problem but energy independence and less reliance on foreign oil is important!!! Obviously if you are big oil you want to stop OWB's and indoor stoves it = less in profit: :censored:

EPA Fireplace vs trash burners

We are very close to having our fireplace ready to burn wood after months of installing delays.
In our city I do not see a ban forthcoming. When council banned leaf burns, which was good since I am extremely allergic to leaf smoke but not dry wood smoke, they also removed the nuisance odor ban. The leaf smoke has sent me to the emergency dept. for breathing treatment. Unfortunately, that opened the door for inconsiderate individuals to start burning trash in their incinerators or fireplaces. We now have horrible smelling smoke year round from several neighbors. I now walk in my own yard at times with a respirator and run the A/C as soon as possible as I can not open the house windows on cool nights.
My pay back: In return I fertilize my lawn with concentrated emulsified fish /oil on warm breezy days towards their direction.:hmm3grin2orange:
The city has no power to stop the trash burners! so how could they hope to stop a clean burning fireplace?

Amen guys! I have tried to wrap my head around the whole thing and like I said its hard to not consider that it is just as simple as its cutting into profits. I am not saying OWB don't smoke at all but I have seen alot of them in my area that seem to not put out as much as some regualr wood burners. It is funny to hear about energy independance but like was said more and more laws get written to stop it. I have thought long and hard about what if you could design/build a solar panel/windpowered system thats sole purpose was to split water into hydrogen during the summer esp. then compress and store it for winter heat use I know it could be done despite the fact hydrogen is dangerous (so is propane) i'm sure there would be a uproar over a system like that too even cleanburning they would argue all the dangers and use of water i'm sure. thanks

:agree2:
Now the Demo's have full control it is bound to get worst.
People need to mind there own business instead of stirring the pot over this primitive cost efficient way of heating.

Speaking of Hydrogen, here is some information on a hydrogen kit for automobiles. It looks very interesting and hopefully this technology gets in the main stream but big oil will probably stop it.
