I have several of those flattening bits like in your picture and they have done well. My last table I bought this bit and it left alot better finish, so that's alot less sanding in the end. Plus you can get 3 of these almost for that one.

I bought one of those 4-winged cheap ones which I planned to use but never did. The Whiteside is top of the line and out of reach. But the ones you cited are reasonable and replacement tips. I'll have to get one once I use up the other.

I upgraded my old angle iron router sled yesterday to to actual sled rails. WOW....what a difference, I wish I'd done this a few years ago
How are they, what diameter did you go with and do they have much flex? Considering using the same style rails, two sets stacked perpendicular, to make my sled system.

Here is the link to the one I got. I've got my table set up at 48". This was my first go with them, I hadn't notice any flex yet.

I have several of the straight 4 winged one that has cut a good bit and then trash them. I got this 2.5" because there is a lot of leveling to do on this cottonwood.
I have another 1.5" for a year now and haven't used it yet.

Not milled yet but 2 hybrid poplar logs were free. and the red oak was $50

Last picture of the standing red oak log that is topped is not mine yet but im trying to get it. I have not put a tape measure on it but eyeballing it….It was probably at least 55 inch diameter and standing about 15 foot tall in the picture.

a mighty small log for me at 25” diameter on the big end. But when i got the chance to pick up 2 Hybrid Poplar logs @ 10’ for the price of felling the tree and helping cut the rest up to firewood size….. well i CANT say no.

Poplar can be boring as F&ck at time but other times it turns out to look like this!!!

This log already had a buyer, 6 slabs @ 2” thick for dresser tops.

ill do the other smaller log tomorrow. Did this 🔽 one this afternoon

He siad it was a “Hybrid Poplar” but i think it was a type of tulip poplar is my guess. I never saw it flowering. Cut it down middle of winter. FULL of water and heavy as **** for their size
Did some research and I guess those are big in Michigan, because they grow super fast (7-8' a year) so were thought to be a good plantation pulpwood tree or restoration wildlife habitat tree. But seems most of them die after twenty years or so, being easily susceptible to canker. Best I can tell, hybrid poplar is usually a blend of eastern cottonwood and European black poplar, so in fact not yellow poplar/tulip tree related. Maybe accounts for why it looks a lot less boring than tulip. For all I know, the large cottonwood I milled here might've been a hybrid poplar, which may be a little cooler looking than plain eastern cottonwood.
