Mint Poulan 4000

This is for all you Poulan enthusiasts out there in AS land. CuttinScott posted a nice Poulan 4000 last week that was traded in. I was fortunate enough to grab it. It arrived today. There was lots of oily sawdust all over it, but mostly the kind that will blow off. It wasn't that old crusty stuff and cleaned up easily. Underneath was a like new saw. I removed the engine shroud and recoil and gave it a good bath in the parts cleaner. I also removed and cleaned the carb. While I was at it I replace the fuel lines. I put it back together and it didn't want to idle or rev up right. I threw in a new plug and VOILA. It runs like a new saw as well! I've yet to test compression, but the piston looked great with the muffler off. There a fair amount of carbon on the crown of the piston, but I'll have that off soon enough anyway

BTW, what's the proper spec on WOT RPMs? I have it set to 12K in the video. It'll turn quite a few more, but I didn't want to go much further until I had an idea what it was supposed to be.

Are these clutch cover decals available?

I understand some of these had a chainbrake. Is that a simple clutch cover replacement? What about the engine shroud where the current guard is bolted on?

Nice saw. Those saws always impressed me when I ran them at GTG. I have a friend that has one that is a little more used but I know it runs good. He is talking about selling it and I might just have to get one for myself.

oh man that's sweet. I have the service manual but it makes no mention of high rpm. The Canadian models had chain brakes as well as some US models. It's a completely different cover. There was a US saw on Fleabay 2 weeks back that had one. So when can I come over and run it?

Sure Bragg about your find! It's just sad that no North American saws exist anymore, I have 2 newer Poulans and they do not give anything up to the imports once tuned up but I think the biggest baddest saw Poulan makes is my 295 Now. Other than Russia we have more tree's than all the other country's combined except South America and they have Strong ties to Germany aka the Boy's from Brazil lol!
Good to see a American made saw what's going to happen when the 1911 Colt starts getting made in China? Sorry for the change in topic I am grumpy today!

Congratulations on what may very well be the best saw buy you will EVER make.

The only thing I see wrong with it is.....All of your "orange" saws will suffer from feelings of inadequacy knowing they will never be able to measure up!

What's normal ring end gap on these things? The gap on both rings is at least 1/8", maybe more! The P&C are in excellent condition.

They left a little for "tolerance" in those days.

How is the compression???

Brad, I hate to be the one to tell you, but those were the rings made in China. Unfortunately, that means the whole saw is sub par. I'll gladly reimburse you for what you payed for it as not to leave a bad taste in your mouth for the Old Poulans. (try Sears for rings, that seems way high) I have an old one in my toolbox but no cylinder to put it in. Do you need an IPL?

Not sure what Wide Open Throttle is supposed to be...but "operating rpm" is listed here as 8500.

Since these don't have the half notch in the end and fit "around" the end locating pin, they have to have a larger gap. The gap was actually about .095". I'm guessing that's just the way they were since there no way this saw has seen much use.
