What are some things I can do to my 660 to get a little more out of it. I do not have the money to send it off to someone and have it really suped up. If you go to the picture forum you can see some pics of some really big hardwood I am currently logging. I would like to get a little more out of my saw for the rest of this job. I do not know much about what can and cannot be done to a saw so give me some basics. How about sprocket chioce???? Mufflers????? ect.. I am on a tight budget right now so keep that in mind. I am running a 36" bar and .050 full skip on it currently.

Mod the muffler, cheapest gain around !!
do a search for muffler mods.
Also I think there is a dual-port muffler available for the 660 !?
The Stihl gurus can tell you more about that :)

Try a dual port muffler. They're available at most saw shops and are probably the best bang for a limited buck. Richen your carb just a little after installing a DP and you'll see and feel a difference.
Big hardwood is just tough cutting...takes time and patience. Super sharp chain really helps. Also, laying out your job a little ahead of yourself to avoid back tracking and wasted motion will make a day go a lot easier.

which saw to buy?

hey!

I'm new here on this forum, and i dont find the "new topic" option on the screen, only "reply".
Well i plan to buy a chainsaw, maybe : stihl 361, 441 or dolmar 7300, 7900,husky 372 xp? I'm not sure yet but i suggest the 361 is a good "beginners" saw?

That is a big tree!!

oooooohhh, lets see first start with a DP muffler you can buy one for it or do it yourself. Try the k&n maxflow airfilter kit. Or you could put a Big Bore kit in it off bailey's. And you could also port the big bore kit. And of course you could do all of them to it at once. Or If you did get some money you could send it to somebody like Dean at washington pro saws, or Big Dave Neiger, or Ken Dunn.:chainsaw: :greenchainsaw:  :)

Those are some pretty stout "beginners" saws. If you have used saws much the 361 or 7900 would be one of my choices. try a search, many threads about each one of those...

Get a dual port muffler cover and throw a 8t sprocket on it . What kind of hardwood are you cutting looks like pretty nice stuff.

buzz, those are cherrybark red oaks, also on this job are american elm, hickory, pecan and swamp chestnut oak.. really big stuff too. Hey, that dual port muffler is just the outside cover?? and I can get it from my saw shop, or will I have to find it elseware.

your saw shop should have it, i did a muffler mod on my 066 and it livened it up. mine is a bit different than some peoples, but it works, i sure do love cutting them cherry barks

Yep, just the front cover.
I have one in the bag, unopened. It's yours for $43......You'll need to tune the carb.

But you'd best be wearing ear pro.....

Red oak really sucks up the power...those are some nice looking trees, and your saw looks brand new! First day on the job for it?

Rb, I am going to check with my shop first and if they do not have one,I will get a hold of you and get it. No, saw is not brand new. It is actually 3 years old I just never really need to use it that much. My climbing saws and 440's get the brunt of the use. 660 reserved for stumps and really big trees.
