My third thread for my new/used MS290. It came with a new 20" bar, and 3/8" chain. If I recall correctly, the MS290's come new with 0.325" chain. How do I check the drive sprocket and make sure I have a match between it and the chain? Is the difference between fit of a 3/8" chain and 0.325" drive sprocket obvious enough by visual comparison to determine if the sprocket and chain pitch match? I haven't run the saw with the chain on it yet, I'm waiting until I can make sure the drive sprocket and new chain match. Thanks in advance all!

It will be etched on the sprocket, you will see something on the side or face of it if you prefer such as:

.325 7T or .325 8T

the same will apply to 3/8''

.375 7T or .375 8T

7T or 8T is the number of teeth and size, a 8T is larger in diameter than a 7 and a 9T is larger in diameter than the 8T.

Checked out my saw last night, and have a 3/8 7 tooth drive sprocket. The chain is 3/8" with the triple hump depth gauge. From my manual, the chain should be a 3/8 RM then. Looks like everything matches fine. Thanks for the help!

If you had a mismatched chain/sprocket you'd notice right away when you tried to pull the chain around the bar by hand. It would jumpy, rough, and catch all the time.
