I bought a MS441 a while back that had a air leak. During shipping, the flywheel side case got broken. The seller credited me $50 to buy another case half. I split the cases with a case splitter and it bent my case splitter. Then I found the wrap handle to be broken and all attempts to weld it failed. I ordered a 3/4 wrap handle. Then when installing the bearings in the case, I accidentally broke the brake handle. Then when pulling the case halves together using screws, I got the crank up to the bearing on the clutch side. Then when trying to pull it on into place, a super tiny crack started to form on the top edge of the case half. Right now it is not in a critical area but I am afraid to keep putting too much pressure on it. How can I pull the case the rest of the way together? On 6 1128 stihl builds, I’ve never had any trouble. What can I go to get these case halves together? Thanks

The crack is right above the cylinder gasket surface, should I be looking for another case half?

We have all been there. Make sure you take a break. Or at least that’s what I do before breaking more. People will yell at me but I’ve split and put back together 50+ saws using an arbor press and cold crank shaft.... no issues yet... as for pulling apart try using a small torch to heat the bearing race. That may make just enough wiggle room to to not have as much friction. As for what I would do with the saw in general.... put it in a tote, wait to buy another parts 441 with a good case and break handle and maybe a ruined tank and top end. Probably pay all of 50-75 bucks for it. Then when you put it together you won’t have that “I hope it holds” in the back of your head.

Heat to install bearings they fall in

Heat to split case even if using splitter

A press is not needed

Pretty sweet stuff, I ordered the basic kit plus the 661 rod & tube-age. Most likely I’ll buy the rest.. I can’t wait to play with ‘em.

I like to make tools, so I "rolled my own" for Stihls. Bought two Chinese taps (12mm LHT, 10mm RHT, already had 8mm RHT) and some all-thread and an assortment of washers from Home Depot. Used them to reassemble an 026 case and they worked great. Judiciously applied heat helps the process go smoothly. Can be made without a drill press - center the hole carefully and keep it straight.
