Brian aka timberwolf did a whole thread here years back with testing and his dyno back in the day here on a 026. You can go super big before any issues arise.
Just search for thread. it will open your eyes for no believers.

Heck seen 18-23% gains just on 30min muffler mods on 290-390. Those are really choked bad. 290 worst.
038 is another saw that’s pretty choked up. I removed the internal baffle on my 038 mag and added an additional outlet on flywheel side. Used a 034 muffler spacer on the inside to add rigidity to the gasket sealing surface after removing the baffle. Turned out really good and saw runs much better now.

I see Red Beard is running a 'Black Friday' sale on everything including West Coast saw parts and mufflers and the 'Bark Box' as well. I don't need anything but he is. From what I see, his modded new saws are pretty steep in price however.

This is about the extent of my muffler mods. Nothing too crazy, any more and they get much too loud.

My partner in crime runs his saws without so much as earplugs. I wonder if he'll still be able to hear his daughter's voice in ten years. 😬 It's incredible how much my hearing has deteriorated over 20 years. I get it checked every couple of years and the dips in the frequency chart line up perfectly with "industrial hearing loss." I've always worn Class 4 or 5 earpro but it still creeps up on you.

My friend who hates loud saws and only runs stock ones is half deaf from running saws for 30 years without hearing protection.
I wear ear plugs if im running the saw for more than a few minutes. There's charts to show you how many db's you can stand per hour before hearing damage. It doesnt have to be really loud to do damage if you're in the noisy area for long periods of time.
I've worked in loud mills/plants for 25 years, I wear custom fit ear plugs all the time at work and the old guys there all told me to wear them all the time while showing me their hearing aids that they need from not using hearing protection.

I guess if you don't value your hearing, open it up! After all, you all refuse to wear hearing protection, right?
Talk to an old logger, if they can hear you.
Over 40+ years working on pro saws, it is so true.
You don't have to get crazy. Moderation is the key. Then there is the fact that certains saws are dogs without a muffler mod. MS361 and 260 come to mind.
