Can anybody comment about the performance of a 036Pro/360Pro - after the muffler has been opened/modded - compared to a bigger saw? By bigger I mean a 65 to 70 cc class saw. Not sure if I'm being clear on my question. Also will a muffler modded 036/360 pull a 24" bar properly/efficiently?

Kevin

i ran a stock 036 pro for a couple years with a 24" bar and it did just fine in NW wood. muffler modded you get some nice gains. now if you had it ported you could see some huge gains. the 036 pro i ported for my dad will keep right up with a stock 044 no problem. and he also claims to get more wood cut per tank of fuel. the saw runs a 20" bar with full comp 3/8" chain now and has a ton of torque. if the rain stops for a while i will set up a log and get some video of it.

Some video would be great. What's an approximate cost to have a saw ported?

my price is $250 for a full woods port job that includes opening both the intake and exhaust, working over the transfer ports, matching the muffler to the ports, advancing the timing, compression is also boosted a slight bit getting rid of the base gasket. on the 036 i also change the cluch drum so you can use the large style rim sprockets like on the 044 through 088. during
march im offering a bonus to celebrate my official opening, return shipping is $20 flat rate in the USA

heres a video with a 7 tooth sprocket with carlton 3/8" full comp chain that just came off my chisel grinder.. my chain angles are still a bit off but did pretty well. once i find my 8 tooth sprocket im eager to test with that.

i chopped the video size down to 229K so its dialup friendly.

I've done a muffler mod on several 036's and 360's. I'm at average elevation of 6000' and it makes a noticable difference. Most saws run too rich at this elevation due to the lack of oxygen, etc. With the muffler mod it balances out nicely with full power at full throttle. In some intances I've switched out the carbs to the two jet carb as well; this is nice too. But I don't have any 'measured' data to prove the exact changes in performance.

i finally found my 8 tooth sprocket, so tomorow i will slap that on and get another video. saw is still tuned a bit rich so i will retune since the new rings are well seated now.

I can open the link to your video, but it won't let me view it. Some error message comes up.

try right clicking the video link and "save target as" and save the video someplace on your computer. then try playing, that should work, if not let me know.

That worked. Good video. Thank ya. Is that a 24" bar on that saw?

Kevin

right now the saw has a 20" bar, but i do still have the orig 24" bar that came with the saw, main reason i quit using the 24" was getting it bound up in a tree and gave the saw a good yank, bending the bar enough to make every cut try to do an arc. i have since learned not to do that! :)

heres a video i just found of the saw before i did the porting work, this is with the spark arrestor screen pulled and the factory outlet in the muffler slightly hand filed open more.

this video is from back in september and on diffrent wood, this was some alder i was logging.

this saw just keeps on impressing me! theres with the 8 tooth sprocket and the carb tuned just right for me. even with the 8pin sprocket you can still push on it pretty hard. i think Gypo would even like my style in this vid

Yup, I'm impressed. From stock to modded is definitely night and day. I probably shouldn't have watched the video's cause when I get my 036Pro/360Pro (or whatever saw I end up with), "I's got's" to have it modded! :D First things first, get the money, then the saw, then "woods" mods. I'll leave my 260 as is for now.

036 mods

looks impressive my o36 cuts good but now I will have to try it for time might have to discuss those mods so do you think this can be a permanent replacement for my sxl 925 ?? :chainsaw:

after one of my NWCS woods saw packages, i dont think you would even bother to grab that 925 again! im highly impressed by the power gains in the 036 and all the pro model stihl saws for that matter. if you want to discuss anything over the phone, PM me your number and im more than willing to chat about saws or anything else, that applies to everybody :) i work on all brands.

did some further stress testing on the 036 today, cut and hauled some alder.
i can definatly say cutting alder is alot safer now that i can power through the cut instead of babying it. allows me some time to get away before she comes down or splits and tries to take me out.

in this picture, you can see the usual home of the saw on the winch of the old Case and my forestry axe strapped to the back cage.

if anybody is wondering from the pic, thats my 1959 Case Terratrac 800C with Carco winch and high arch.
