My cost for free heat...

I managed to string out my additions over the years. I had most of my saws before I started burning. I had 5-6 cord piled up to sell and then bought a big old place that had a woodstove. Borrowed a splitter the first couple of years and dealt whith a 2wd 3/4 ton truck until last Feb. 2nd year burning upgraded to a catalytic stove to get longer burn times + new double walled stove pipe ~ 3000. Built a log splitter the next summer - fall ~ 1700. Added an old pickup box trailer to haul more per load $40 (gas was going up). This year 4wd truck, midsize saw 346xp NE and added the log lift and hydraulic 4way to the splitter ~9500.

Now the truck wasn't bought just for firewood but it was one of the drivers. Getting stuck is no fun. Everything else was though.

When you are avoiding $3-400 heat bills in the winter you can justify a quite a bit. If you can resist severe CAD eventually your purchases will level off. After all most purchases are longer term i.e. I only have one bench chain grinder (that pre dates my burning wood) but I would buy a square chisel grinder if the opportunity to get one cheap presented itself. No plans to replace the stove.

It's a good excuse to get out with nature and get some excercise. :) Especially if you have some friends to do it with.

Oh BTW wife and I talked about skidsteers and dump trailers for a bit tonight.:) Not on the short term list but hey she was agreeable.

Getting rid of my trailer and going to a dump trailer would be on my wishlist. Short of that, I'll buy a ramp and put the 4-wheeler in the truck and tow the trailer.

I really want another couple of saws. If I could build around what I have now with a MS460 and then maybe a MS180, I would be set. My property is level on the field and the timber rolls. I have plans to cut in deer/4 wheeler trails. The truck won't go in the woods but the 4-wheeler and a trailer will.

my insert was about 1300
2 saws almost 600
splitter 900

i ended up selling my old faithful tacoma about a year and a half ago and bought a 2500 dodge ram 8ft bed. only bad part its 2wd but it was an even swap money wise. man i love that truck. i bought her a bit beat up but i work my trucks so thats not an issue for me.

woodbooga sounds like were in the same boat i want 2 pro saws but the finances just dont cover it. if i missed any work id be totally screwed. im slowly saving for a 372 and then a 346. i already told the wife if anyones gonna get me anything i want cash so i can get a saw :)

What I started with

A 2 wheel drive shortbed pickup, and a 25 year old 041.
The creation of a splitter was almost immediate.

Now... Oh my gosh :givebeer:

MS260, MS440, MS460. Numerous bars, several gas cans, 5 gallons of gas oil. almost 50 gallons of bar lube in stock! (I don't like to run out). Breaker/spinner/511A grinder. Probably 400 feet of chain in several styles.
4wheel drive dumptruck, and 4wheel drive shortbed. Splitter has been upgraded a few times, and I have a short conveyor on hand.

Free heat? Not a chance. I sell a little, but this is going to take years to break even. Why do it? I like the excercise. I like poking holes in my body with the hookeroon, and smashing fingers with logs. I like the sound of a large saw pulling big chips. I like watching the dumptruck dropping another load of wood in a yard. I like collecting $$$ for it.

this is a funny thread ,
for me , it goes something like this .
new MS 260, slightly used Yamaha Grizzly 660 atv , 4x4 Jeep Cherokee, 16 foot trailer, new Pacific Energy stove Super 27 red with nickel door and accents (because the wife thought black was boring)

yeh free heat........... :monkey:
but it's great exercise , and the heat from the stove is like no other when the snow is flying

:givebeer:
