All you need is the Goofy file and they work like a dream. Just a little common sense is all it takes, were talking about filing a chain not brain surgery here.

slow short and steady strokes I tell ya will get the results.

Well since I am doing a little invoicing today I need a little break.
Here are the 2 files the Goofy is ontop. Now I made this pics a little small for you guys that have dial up and are spys.

Here's one thing you need to get this whole thing down. My friend slapped this together for me. What a guy.

well grabby and fast responds real good to pressure.. of course not close to where i hope to get to..
now is a chain faster, with more angle behind the edge,or less.
i had what i thot mite be an way too tapered top plate edge..but the edge held up well . so thats where im at..
thanks for any input.

Hey Mark.  I Just reviewed the thread a little and see that your comment "dress the wheel" wasn't made to Tony as I'd mistakenly remembered.  It had seemed awfully out of place that way.  Sorry.

Thanks for the gold dust, D.  There are probably some nuggets laying around nearby.  It always helps to have someone show you were to pan.

Mark, what is the major difference between the goofy and cheesy files.  Is it that you can get in better with the thinner file?  Obviously, the goofy will put a little bit of a curved hook in the side cutter profile while the cheesy will create a straight edge.  Would you agree?

Frank, I recall an article I read in a woodworking magazine about a year ago.  It covered work positioning for various types of tasks.  As I recall, it was something like if what you're doing requires power, waist-high would be best and if it requires finesse, breast-high.  That's an off-the-cuff synopsis; I'd have to see if I could find the article to be sure.  I remember agreeing with it at the time based on my various experience.

Glen

just tried the 962 an 372..
same chain just longer chain, on the 372..20inch at .030depth versus -16inch at .022depth..
results the 962 actually blast out the gate faster..stayed the same except for a little faster as it warmed up..
the 372 sluggish out the gate but gained an passed the 962 as it warmed up..still non conclusive.. ill sleep on it ..
mabe ill make some sense of it..
both cut very fast,, for me ,in any case..
ill be interested in how the stihl factory square grd compares..thanks for the input

Seems to me like the quality of the files varys sometimes from batch to batch. Occasionally you get some Monday morning files. The last ones that I got were 6 sided Pherd and are good files. The Oberg files usually are very good and for me are the easiest to use. A lot of the old timers used the triangle shape files, but they just dont work for me.

John

John, I seem to hit the tie strap more with the triangular type and it is harder to get into a new tooth without hitting the raker. The flat style will do .325 but the triangular won't.
Tony Marks, your mail box is jammed full.
Glen, I agree with the theory on filing for power or precision thing. I use a visor with 2.5 Diopter lenz plus my readers which gives me a focal range of less than a foot. If I had the vise at waist height I would be all humped up like a hound humpin a football. My clamp is mounted on a swivel ball so I can tip it towards me such that the file is pretty much horizontal.

hold the phone.. the bar sprocket on mu husk 372 was locking up..i had it al blamed on the 8 pin causeing it,by chain speed or something . but found a ba place on the bar rite under the bottum of the sprocket . may have been the case ,
for a while.. mite explain the time it takes for the saw to find its power.
  .. in any case u cant hit very hard if somebody holding u arm..so we start all over again ..
kinda feels bad to think i wus racing my hoss without doing my pt to make sure ,,
it was ready for it..
in any case ,just to be on he safe side ,illl go back to 7 pin ,for now..the 8 pin is power match[from husky dealer] and i dont like the way it fits..[loose]im starting to get a case against these power matches that ive seen..

Marky;
Thats the ticket. You really do need to see what is happening when you are trying to position the file ( or stone corner) within 5 thou on the tooth. It is not a matter of feel. You have to be able to see what you are doing. A slight side beak on the tooth makes a big difference compared to any top beak. I think Balloonknott may be pulling Glen's leg a bit with the amount of beak on the tooth he showed us, but for sure you would not have to lay on that to make it cut!

point taken an ill be thinking on it..
took it out already today and still gota 3-4 minute time to find the saws power..
but so much smoother and faster. feeding good now.. just goes to show ,u got to just keep on keepin on.. thanks again for the advice. i consider it like ,,access to knowledge much greater than my own.. and that aint stroking ,just what i think..

Frank, Use your magnifiers, and I wasn't pulling G's leg. When you stone a tooth, you create a beak, but other than that, the file should be perfectly in the point.

When Did the Banning take place. Was there any incident leading up to it. If not I think that Ballonknotts behaviour shouldn't be judged by what went on under previous lives. I sure dont agree with someone simply coming back as a continueing bunghole just because he chooses a different username.

Goofy files are available thru Baileys online. They dont show up in Canadian catalogue and I'm not sure if they are in the American listing either, I dont have the part number available but may find it out in the shop. Baileys Moderator, Grand Dog handled my phone inquiry to get the goofy's. Because the flat is tangent to a rounded edge, the rotation of the file is not nearly as critical to get an acceptable sideplate hook.

So your saying that the sideplate doesn't matter as much as the top plate? And if so are you trying to keep a 45 degree bevel on the bottom of the top plate? As you can see I haven't started to file the square chain yet but am trying to get all the info I can on it.
