Here are some pictures of a pine removal we did this week end. I was the ground crew. The tree was about 32 inches DBH and was right next to two fences. One bordered on US Govenment property at St Julien Creek in Chesapeake VA. Had to be careful not to bust through that one! The tree had to be removed limb by limb and in sections. On Sunday we split the blocks using axes.

Cool job, right next to a Government property like that.

I have to say though the lack of PPE is disheartening. No hardhats, safety glasses, or chaps. :bang:

Yes! I agree about the PPE and it's importance. I serve as ground man and ALWAYS wear a cranial (flight line saftey helmet with hearing protection) ear plugs, gloves and saftey glasses. I don't have the chaps though. I try to be safty concious at all times. I never run a saw on the ground while the tree boss is in the tree unless he is aware of it. I opt instead to cut the smaller lowered limbs using a hand saw, which is very effective. This allows me to be aware of whats happening in the tree. Usually it's just the two of us and I am hoping some of my safty awareness will rub off on the man in charge. The best I can hope for is to protect myself. Here are a few more pictures. The shots from above are of me on the ground.

So yeah, the helmet has already been mentioned, but I'd also throw out the cutting of branches a foot or more out from the spar. Get those things as flush with the tree as you can. They'll hurt if you fall into/onto one, and they'll tear up a yard if you fall the spar with them on there.

JMO. I'm a timber guy, so I do my removals in one piece.

Jeff
